Dr. Margaret Carpenter co-founded the Abortion Coalition for Telemedicine (ACT) after the overturning of Roe v. Wade to help women across the U.S. access abortion care. The group provides clinicians with legal and technical support to enable them to provide abortion care via telehealth\u2014which makes up about 27% of abortions nationwide\u2014to people in all 50 states.\u00a0<\/p>\n
On Jan. 31, 2025, Carpenter, a New York-based physician, became the first U.S. doctor to be criminally charged for providing abortion pills across state lines after a Louisiana grand jury indicted her for alleged \u201ccriminal abortion.\u201d About a month earlier, she had been sued by Texas\u2019 attorney general for allegedly prescribing abortion pills to a woman in the state.<\/p>\n
But, Carpenter has so far avoided arrest and other penalties thanks to a New York \u201cshield law\u201d that protects providers who offer out-of-state abortions, and ACT\u2019s work continues. \u201c[Most people in the U.S.] believe what a woman does with a pregnancy should be between her and her provider, not decided by politicians or judges,\u201d Carpenter says. \u201cUntil this freedom becomes a reality for everyone around the world, there is more work to be done.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Dr. Margaret Carpenter co-founded the Abortion Coalition for Telemedicine (ACT) after the overturning of Roe v.
