{"id":282552,"date":"2026-02-13T17:42:15","date_gmt":"2026-02-13T17:42:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/282552\/"},"modified":"2026-02-13T17:42:15","modified_gmt":"2026-02-13T17:42:15","slug":"china-overhauls-consumer-price-basket-with-never-before-seen-unveiling-of-its-composition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/282552\/","title":{"rendered":"China overhauls consumer price basket, with never-before-seen unveiling of its composition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Beijing has for the first time revealed the intricate composition of China\u2019s consumer price index (CPI) basket, and a fresh recalibration sees it shift more weight towards services and new types of consumption goods.<\/p>\n<p>The basket adjustment itself, conducted every five years, comes as the Chinese leadership seeks to steer the world\u2019s second-largest economy out of deflationary pressure while <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3338472\/china-must-take-action-avoid-japan-style-deflation-spiral-scholars-warn?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">avoiding a prolonged Japan-style<\/a> spiralling of prices.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has \u201cappropriately reduced\u201d the weight of food prices in the basket to 17.2 per cent and that of housing to 22.1 per cent, according to its online statement on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Conversely, it increased the weight of transport and communications to 14.3 per cent;
