Experts predict the hefty iceball may soon be permanently ejected from the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/solar-system\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/solar-system\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/solar-system\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar system<\/a>, dooming it to drift through interstellar space \u2014 like the &#8220;alien&#8221; comet <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/3i-atlas\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/3i-atlas\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/3i-atlas\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">3I\/ATLAS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The new comet, dubbed <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ssd.jpl.nasa.gov\/tools\/sbdb_lookup.html#\/?sstr=C%2F2024%20E1\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/ssd.jpl.nasa.gov\/tools\/sbdb_lookup.html#\/?sstr=C%2F2024%20E1\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">C\/2024 E1 (Wierzcho\u015b)<\/a>, was discovered in March 2024 by Polish astronomer <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/lpl.arizona.edu\/staff\/kacper-wierzchos\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/lpl.arizona.edu\/staff\/kacper-wierzchos\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kacper Wierzcho\u015b<\/a>, who spotted the icy object sailing toward us with a 4.9-foot (1.5 meter) telescope at the Mount Lemmon Observatory in Arizona. The comet has since been observed by the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/james-webb-space-telescope\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/james-webb-space-telescope\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/james-webb-space-telescope\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">James Webb Space Telescope<\/a> (<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/james-webb-space-telescope\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/james-webb-space-telescope\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/james-webb-space-telescope\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">JWST<\/a>), which detected large amounts of carbon dioxide in its coma \u2014 the cloud of gas and dust that surrounds the comet&#8217;s icy shell.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"5c0d6223-42da-4632-b21a-81047e2498da-2\">An <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/mnrasl\/article\/541\/1\/L8\/8126728?login=false\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/mnrasl\/article\/541\/1\/L8\/8126728?login=false\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">initial analysis<\/a> of JWST data suggested that Comet Wierzcho\u015b&#8217; nucleus has a diameter of around 8.5 miles (13.7 kilometers), which is roughly two-thirds the length of Manhattan and around four times the island&#8217;s width. However, a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2510.26549\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2510.26549\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">more recent study<\/a>, which has not yet been peer-reviewed, hints that this may be an overestimate.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"0ebe272b-ef1c-42a5-a8a1-88d0f66c7e1b\">Comet Wierzcho\u015b originates from the Oort cloud \u2014 the expansive reservoir of comets and other icy objects lurking near the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/where-does-the-solar-system-end\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/where-does-the-solar-system-end\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/where-does-the-solar-system-end\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">outer edge of the solar system<\/a> \u2014 and is hyperbolic, meaning that it has an open and flattened trajectory, and does not repeatedly orbit the sun. This is likely the first time it has ever ventured into the inner solar system, the researchers suspect.<\/p>\n<p>Some researchers believe that it has been slowly falling toward the sun for between 1 million and 3 million years, although it is hard to tell for sure. (Image credit: NASA\/JPL\/Small-Body Database Lookup)<\/p>\n<p id=\"ebc47e96-275d-4a18-9959-323fee67b6cd\">The eccentric iceball recently passed its closest point to our home star, known as perihelion, on Jan. 20, reaching a minimum distance of around 52 million miles (84 million km) from the solar surface, Live Science&#8217;s sister site <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/comets\/comet-wierzchos-buzzes-the-sun-later-today-but-can-you-see-it\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/comets\/comet-wierzchos-buzzes-the-sun-later-today-but-can-you-see-it\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Space.com previously reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It will soon make its closest approach to Earth, on Tuesday (Feb. 17), when it will be around 94 million miles (151 million km) from our planet \u2014 roughly the same distance away as the sun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Get the world\u2019s most fascinating discoveries delivered straight to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-effe7fe8-0a70-49d9-aa93-d3f54ba4fd00\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>Going, going, gone<\/p>\n<p id=\"4e316105-00d1-4e0c-99d8-56d88c346d85\">According to the researchers, it could take several decades or even centuries for Comet Wierzcho\u015b to officially leave the solar system. Austrian astrophotographer <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.astrostudio.at\/aboutme.php\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"http:\/\/www.astrostudio.at\/aboutme.php\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Gerald Rhemann<\/a> captured one of the best photos of the iceball on Jan. 26 from a night sky reserve in Namibia (see above).<\/p>\n<p>Many of these photos, including Rhemann&#8217;s, show the comet&#8217;s coma glowing green. This rare hue is likely tied to its high carbon content, as <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/comet-3i-atlas-is-getting-greener-and-brighter-as-it-approaches-earth-new-images-reveal\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/comet-3i-atlas-is-getting-greener-and-brighter-as-it-approaches-earth-new-images-reveal\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/comet-3i-atlas-is-getting-greener-and-brighter-as-it-approaches-earth-new-images-reveal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">seen in previous comets<\/a>, although the exact cause of its coloration has not been reported on by researchers.<\/p>\n<p>The emerald iceball will not become bright enough to be visible to the naked eye.
