{"id":28332,"date":"2025-09-17T19:54:09","date_gmt":"2025-09-17T19:54:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/28332\/"},"modified":"2025-09-17T19:54:09","modified_gmt":"2025-09-17T19:54:09","slug":"elizabeth-gaskells-house-adds-mystery-paperback-to-ticket-price","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/28332\/","title":{"rendered":"Elizabeth Gaskell\u2019s House adds mystery paperback to ticket price"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>                                17 September 2025<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4\">Alistair Hardaker <br \/>Image: A novel introduction (Elizabeth Gaskell&#8217;s House)<\/p>\n<p>Manchester house offers wrapped mystery novels as survey shows half of visitors unfamiliar with Victorian writer\u2019s work during literature festival.<\/p>\n<p>Elizabeth Gaskell\u2019s House is taking a proactive approach to the fact that only half of visitors have read the author\u2019s work. <\/p>\n<p>The former home of the writer, in Manchester, is offering a special ticket that includes a surprise edition of one of Gaskell\u2019s most celebrated novels, wrapped in brown paper. <\/p>\n<p>Visitors who book a special ticket to Elizabeth Gaskell\u2019s House in Manchester can select a \u2018mystery novel\u2019 when entering, as part of Manchester Literature Festival celebrations. <\/p>\n<p>The initiative ties in with the house\u2019s current exhibition, I\u2019ve Never Read Elizabeth Gaskell.  This explores how three young writers in residence \u2013 Georgia Affonso, Princess Arinola Adegbite, and Guruleen Kahlo \u2013 have engaged with Elizabeth\u2019s legacy for the first time. <\/p>\n<p>A poll conducted during the exhibition has revealed that approximately half of visitors have not read Gaskell\u2019s work before.<\/p>\n<p>                                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/A-novel-introduction-Elizabeth-Gaskells-House.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><br \/>\n                                    (Elizabeth Gaskell&#8217;s House)<\/p>\n<p>Sally Jastrzebski-Lloyd, director of Elizabeth Gaskell\u2019s House, said: \u201cVisitors are drawn by Elizabeth\u2019s fascinating life story as a changemaker within Victorian society and the chance to explore Manchester\u2019s only literary house.  We understand that \u2013 but we also thought this was the perfect opportunity to offer an introduction to her novels. With our special ticket, visitors can now enjoy both.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A variety of paperback titles include Wives and Daughters, North and South, Mary Barton, Cranford, Sylvia\u2019s Lovers, Ruth and a short story collection. <\/p>\n<p>The special ticket will be priced at \u00a313.50, including entry and novel, and made available to book on open days from Wednesday 15 October until Sunday 26 October.
