The lovely cloud glows against the void of space, not unlike a cosmic Valentine&#8217;s Day signal.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"ce388bd1-c21e-4334-bd57-879282dff7e7-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Mira A is in the late stages of its life, a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22471-red-giant-stars.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22471-red-giant-stars.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22471-red-giant-stars.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">red giant<\/a> swelling and losing mass as it prepares to fade into a white dwarf. While stars of this type routinely <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/6638-supernova.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/6638-supernova.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/6638-supernova.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shed material<\/a>, the sheer scale and symmetry of Mira A&#8217;s recent outflow surprised astronomers, according to a new study.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"19e2eb2f-27ae-4c9d-9b30-e17a7f408f78\">&#8220;We were very surprised to see this structure,&#8221; study lead author Theo Khouri, an astronomer from Chalmers University, said in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chalmers.se\/en\/current\/news\/see-heart-shaped-cosmic-lighthouse\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.chalmers.se\/en\/current\/news\/see-heart-shaped-cosmic-lighthouse\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a statement<\/a>. &#8220;We also see that the star&#8217;s illumination of the surrounding dust varies in an unexpected way, which implies that the star acts like a lighthouse \u2014 illuminating its environment unevenly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The expelled matter amounts to roughly seven <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17638-how-big-is-earth.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17638-how-big-is-earth.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17638-how-big-is-earth.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth masses<\/a>, far more than scientists would expect, with gas filling the heart&#8217;s interior and dust outlining the edges. The star&#8217;s light also sweeps across the cloud like a cosmic beacon, causing the heart-shaped plume to glow as if it were radiating love into space.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We know that stars like Mira lose mass as they age, but we did not expect it to happen in such large and sudden bursts,&#8221; Khouri added.<\/p>\n<p>The discovery was made using data from the European Southern Observatory&#8217;s (ESO) <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40736-very-large-telescope.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40736-very-large-telescope.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40736-very-large-telescope.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Very Large Telescope<\/a> (VLT) and the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/25534-alma.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/25534-alma.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/25534-alma.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Atacama Large Millimeter\/submillimeter Array<\/a> (ALMA) in Chile.
