It can also be used to reduce a high temperature. It&#8217;s available to buy from a pharmacy or shop, but you may be able to get 1g tablets on prescription if you have long-term pain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;It comes as tablets, capsules, syrup, powder that you mix with water, or suppositories. The 1g tablets are only available if prescribed by a doctor. Paracetamol is also available combined with other painkillers and anti-sickness medicines. If you&#8217;ve been prescribed warfarin to prevent blood clots, or any medication for epilepsy or tuberculosis, it&#8217;s best to speak with a doctor before using paracetamol.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">When it comes to combining paracetamol with other painkillers, the NHS states: &#8220;It&#8217;s safe to take paracetamol with other types of painkiller that do not contain paracetamol, such as <a aria-label=\"ibuprofenLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/medicines\/ibuprofen-for-adults\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">ibuprofen<\/a>, <a aria-label=\"aspirinLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/medicines\/aspirin-for-pain-relief\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">aspirin<\/a> or <a aria-label=\"codeineLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/medicines\/codeine\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">codeine<\/a>. Do not take paracetamol alongside other medicines that contain paracetamol. If you take two different medicines that contain paracetamol, there&#8217;s a risk of overdose.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">For most adults, the standard dose is two 500mg tablets taken four times within 24 hours, ensuring at least four hours between each dose. You shouldn&#8217;t exceed eight tablets during this period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Whilst paracetamol is generally considered safe for most people, this advice comes after research <a aria-label=\"from the University of NottinghamLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/acrjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/acr.25471\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">from the University of Nottingham<\/a> revealed potential risks associated with long-term use. The study, published in November 2024, cautioned that repeated doses in older patients could heighten the risk of heart, gastrointestinal, and kidney complications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">During their investigation, researchers analysed medical records from 180,483 people aged 65 and above who had been prescribed paracetamol. These were compared against 402,478 people of similar age who hadn&#8217;t taken the medication.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The findings were concerning, revealing that &#8216;prolonged paracetamol usage&#8217; could significantly raise the risk of &#8216;serious complications&#8217;, including heart failure, high <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/lifestyle\/health\/ten-ways-banish-high-blood-9621402\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">blood pressure<\/a>, stomach ulcers, and chronic kidney disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">As a result, the research team called for a &#8216;careful reconsideration&#8217; of prescribing paracetamol as the first-line treatment for managing long-term pain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Lead author <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nottingham.ac.uk\/news\/paracetamol-safety-for-older-people#:~:text=Blog-,Paracetamol%20may%20not%20be%20as%20safe%20as%20perceived%20in%20older,according%20to%20a%20new%20study&amp;text=New%20research%2C%20led%20by%20experts,gastrointestinal%2C%20cardiovascular%20and%20renal%20complications.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">Professor Weiya Zhang explained at the time<\/a>: &#8220;Whilst further research is now needed to confirm our findings, given its minimal pain-relief effect, the use of paracetamol as a first-line pain killer for long-term conditions such as osteoarthritis in older people needs to be carefully considered.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">For more information on paracetamol, visit the <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/medicines\/paracetamol-for-adults\/how-and-when-to-take-paracetamol-for-adults\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">NHS website<\/a>.
