{"id":285458,"date":"2026-02-15T15:34:20","date_gmt":"2026-02-15T15:34:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/285458\/"},"modified":"2026-02-15T15:34:20","modified_gmt":"2026-02-15T15:34:20","slug":"eddie-jones-verdict-on-new-all-blacks-coach-targets-and-who-new-zealand-should-pay-double","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/285458\/","title":{"rendered":"Eddie Jones&#8217; verdict on new All Blacks coach targets and who New Zealand should &#8216;pay double&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Eddie Jones has weighed in on the two frontrunners to replace Scott Robertson as the All Blacks head coach and the \u2018sensational\u2019 player New Zealand should lure back.<\/p>\n<p>Following the shock announcement of Robertson\u2019s departure last month, reports state that the race to be his successor has come down to two men: Jamie Joseph and Dave Rennie.<\/p>\n<p>This after the likes of Joe Schmidt, Vern Cotter and John Mitchell all ruled themselves out of the running for the position. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/team\/new-zealand\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Zealand Rugby<\/a> reportedly reached out to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/news\/1493411ian-foster-mooted-to-reclaim-all-blacks-job-as-nz-rugby-approach-sir-steve-hansen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sir Steve Hansen and Ian Foster, requesting<\/a> that the pair of former head coaches apply for the vacancy.<\/p>\n<p>Eddie Jones on Dave Rennie and Jamie Joseph<\/p>\n<p>Warren Gatland, Wayne Pivac and Kieran Crowley all meet the criteria set out by NZ Rugby to fill the position but still, it is largely seen as a two-horse race between Rennie and Joseph, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/tag\/eddie-jones\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jones<\/a> believes that both coaches are well-equipped to step up to the plate.<\/p>\n<p>When NZ Rugby advertised the position, they insisted that potential candidates had to be New Zealanders and have to have international head coaching experience.<\/p>\n<p>Jones agreed with that decision as he doesn\u2019t believe that New Zealand needs to look at foreign coaches for Robertson\u2019s successor. He did speak glowingly about Rennie and Joseph. Jones replaced the former as Australia\u2019s head coach in 2023, while the latter succeeded him at Japan in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew Zealand rugby is so strong that they need their own coaches, and there are some good guys there,\u201d the Japan boss told the <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HMRlt2WFIj8\" target=\"_blank\">DSPN podcast with Martin Devlin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJamie\u2019s had a good apprenticeship with Japan. He did eight years there. He had a great run into 2019, then the next period of time during COVID was probably a pretty tough period for him; he will have learned a lot from that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDave Rennie was doing a good job with Australia; he has got a great record at the Chiefs and Glasgow, and he\u2019s coaching in form at the moment. You should see him play up here. 35! He\u2019s the best player here by an absolute mile; every game is absolutely sensational,\u201d he remarked.<\/p>\n<p>Want more from Planet Rugby?
