{"id":285725,"date":"2026-02-15T20:22:11","date_gmt":"2026-02-15T20:22:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/285725\/"},"modified":"2026-02-15T20:22:11","modified_gmt":"2026-02-15T20:22:11","slug":"wellington-water-chairs-resignation-right-thing-to-do-mayor-andrew-little","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/285725\/","title":{"rendered":"Wellington Water chair&#8217;s resignation &#8216;right thing to do&#8217; &#8211; Mayor Andrew Little"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/4JTC4H5_Andrew_Little_12_02_26_1_2_jpg.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"700\" alt=\"Wellington Mayor Andrew Little discusses Wellington Water Moa Point issue\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nWellington mayor Andrew Little.<br \/>\nPhoto: RNZ \/ Mark Papalii\n<\/p>\n<p>Wellington&#8217;s mayor says he has confidence in Wellington Water&#8217;s current leadership, after its chair resigned in the wake of the Moa Point crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Nick Leggett <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/586892\/wellington-water-chair-nick-leggett-resigns-over-moa-point-sewage-disaster\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stepped down<\/a> on Sunday, saying the failure at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/586655\/moa-point-wellington-mayor-makes-first-move-towards-inquiry\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Moa Point<\/a> treatment plant was deeply serious and had affected the environment, public health and the community.<\/p>\n<p>Last week the plant failed &#8211; sending millions of litres of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/586655\/moa-point-wellington-mayor-makes-first-move-towards-inquiry\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">raw sewage into Cook Strait<\/a> per day.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Andrew Little said Leggett&#8217;s resignation was the right thing to do, and he believed the remaining directors could lead work on restoring the plant.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Particularly the deputy chair person who is going to be stepping up &#8211; Bill Bayfield &#8211; I have confidence they [the directors] will continue to lead the organisation to respond effectively, they have to do that in conjunction with Wellington City Council.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Little said Leggett made the decision to resign, and that it was &#8220;the right thing to do&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Wellington Water has I think been struggling with some public confidence issues for some time, this further incident doesn&#8217;t help. And it&#8217;s not a question of blame, it&#8217;s about indicating the organisation accepts the seriousness of it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/4LTRE7E_image_crop_141360.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"590\" alt=\"Transporting New Zealand CEO Nick Leggett\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nFile photo.
