{"id":286352,"date":"2026-02-16T06:34:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-16T06:34:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/286352\/"},"modified":"2026-02-16T06:34:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-16T06:34:08","slug":"coalition-government-would-be-re-elected-on-latest-poll-but-both-major-parties-down","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/286352\/","title":{"rendered":"Coalition Government would be re-elected on latest poll, but both major parties down"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"iSXYlpzztwWbxuk\" style=\"display:none\">In the preferred-PM stakes, National leader Christopher Luxon and his Labour counterpart Chris Hipkins are both on 20%, down three points and one point respectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"iSXYlpzztwWbxuk\" style=\"display:none\">NZ First leader Winston Peters is up a point to 10%, while the Greens\u2019 Chl\u00f6e Swarbrick is steady on 5% and Act\u2019s David Seymour is down a point to 4%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"iSXYlpzztwWbxuk\" style=\"display:none\">The poll comes after a difficult week for the coalition, which had to bat away accusations it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/lng-levy-gas-charges-likely-be-passed-on-to-consumers-extent-of-power-bill-reduction-open-to-market-dynamics-officials-warned\/premium\/5SW7WUYAAVB3FPCTH4BVBIRGKU\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/lng-levy-gas-charges-likely-be-passed-on-to-consumers-extent-of-power-bill-reduction-open-to-market-dynamics-officials-warned\/premium\/5SW7WUYAAVB3FPCTH4BVBIRGKU\/\">introducing a \u201cgas tax\u201d for Kiwis<\/a>, as the new liquified natural gas (LNG) levy was labelled by the Labour Party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"iSXYlpzztwWbxuk\" style=\"display:none\">The announcement of a new LNG import terminal, which the Government said would ultimately lead to lower power bills for New Zealand households, became <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/energy-minister-simon-watts-claims-lng-levy-to-pay-for-import-facility-isnt-a-levy-as-labour-attacks-gas-tax\/XSY2OR5JNREEVI6VQZC3BXMKYE\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/energy-minister-simon-watts-claims-lng-levy-to-pay-for-import-facility-isnt-a-levy-as-labour-attacks-gas-tax\/XSY2OR5JNREEVI6VQZC3BXMKYE\/\">a debate over whether the levy on power companies was a tax or not<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"iSXYlpzztwWbxuk\" style=\"display:none\">There were also questions over the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/india-free-trade-agreement-text-revealed-what-the-government-says-about-the-deal-v-what-the-secret-text-says\/premium\/SCLRHA6P5VGF7DKSDQHMDKF26Y\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/india-free-trade-agreement-text-revealed-what-the-government-says-about-the-deal-v-what-the-secret-text-says\/premium\/SCLRHA6P5VGF7DKSDQHMDKF26Y\/\">Trade Minister\u2019s characterisation of elements of the India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement<\/a>. NZ First isn\u2019t supporting it, meaning Labour\u2019s backing will be pivotal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"iSXYlpzztwWbxuk\" style=\"display:none\">The 1News-Verian poll from December had National on 36% (up two points), Labour on 35% (up three points), Act on 10% (up two points), New Zealand First steady on 9% and the Greens were down four points that month to 7%. <\/p>\n<p class=\"iSXYlpzztwWbxuk\" style=\"display:none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/topic\/political-polls\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/topic\/political-polls\/\">December\u2019s poll<\/a> also had Te P\u0101ti M\u0101ori dropping to 1% after months of internal fighting and public disputes that culminated in two of its MPs being ousted. <\/p>\n<p class=\"iSXYlpzztwWbxuk\" style=\"display:none\">A year before the party hit 7% amid the highs of the landmark h\u012bkoi to Parliament and haka in the House. At the 2023 election, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/new-political-poll-chris-bishop-joins-preferred-pm-ranks-greens-tpm-lose-chunk-of-support\/LVUWTRNKXJAZVJJFOC4ADOR2YE\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/new-political-poll-chris-bishop-joins-preferred-pm-ranks-greens-tpm-lose-chunk-of-support\/LVUWTRNKXJAZVJJFOC4ADOR2YE\/\">Te P\u0101ti M\u0101ori <\/a>won six of the seven M\u0101ori seats. <\/p>\n<p class=\"iSXYlpzztwWbxuk\" style=\"display:none\">There are yet to be any firm signs of reconciliation between the two factions of the party. At Waitangi, party co-leader Rawiri Waititi did appear to extend an olive branch but that was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/waitangi-2026-ngapuhi-chair-says-te-pati-maori-powhiri-haka-is-last-straw-offer-to-meet-no-longer-on-the-table\/HQOX6HOCHFAPPFNO3SXLNPI44A\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/waitangi-2026-ngapuhi-chair-says-te-pati-maori-powhiri-haka-is-last-straw-offer-to-meet-no-longer-on-the-table\/HQOX6HOCHFAPPFNO3SXLNPI44A\/\">swiftly overshadowed<\/a> by a supporting haka that one Far North leader said \u201ccontradicted\u201d Waititi\u2019s sentiment. <\/p>\n<p class=\"iSXYlpzztwWbxuk\" style=\"display:none\">And the party is awaiting the release of the court ruling on whether its move to oust Te Tai Tokerau MP Mariameno Kapa-Kingi was legitimate. <\/p>\n<p class=\"iSXYlpzztwWbxuk\" style=\"display:none\">The latest poll was conducted between February 7 and February 11, 2026, with 1003 eligible voters polled by mobile phone (501) and online, using online panels (502).
