{"id":287271,"date":"2026-02-16T21:37:10","date_gmt":"2026-02-16T21:37:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/287271\/"},"modified":"2026-02-16T21:37:10","modified_gmt":"2026-02-16T21:37:10","slug":"new-zealand-sailgp-team-open-up-on-traumatic-crash-in-auckland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/287271\/","title":{"rendered":"New Zealand SailGP team open up on &#8216;traumatic&#8217; crash in Auckland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/4JT7NVU_SB1_7316_jpg.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"802\" alt=\"Black Foils SailGP Team helmed by Peter Burling and SailGP Team France helmed by Quentin Delapierre collide during the New Zealand Sail Grand Prix in Auckland, 2026.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nBlack Foils SailGP Team helmed by Peter Burling and SailGP Team France helmed by Quentin Delapierre collide during the New Zealand Sail Grand Prix in Auckland, 2026.<br \/>\nPhoto: Simon Bruty for SailGP \/ PHOTOSPORT\n<\/p>\n<p>New Zealand&#8217;s Black Foils team has broken their silence on the &#8216;traumatic&#8217;, high-speed collision with DS Team France at the SailGP event in Auckland that left two sailors injured and badly damaged the boats.<\/p>\n<p>Black Foils grinder Louis Sinclair suffered compound fractures in both legs and required surgery on his right, while French strategist Manon Audinet was hospitalised with abdominal injuries after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/sport\/586875\/sailgp-black-foils-collide-with-france-two-sailors-including-one-kiwi-injured\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the crash in the first leg of race three on Saturday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Black Foils co-Chief Executive Blair Tuke said the collision had shaken everyone involved.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Saturday&#8217;s incident was obviously a very traumatic one, not only for us as the Black Foils but also the French boat and everyone around it,&#8221; Tuke said in a video posted on social media with teammate and co-Chief Executive Peter Burling.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was tough for everyone, but the message we&#8217;ve had, we&#8217;re really feeling the aroha (love) and it helps bind us together as we pave the way forward.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>SailGP&#8217;s F50 foiling catamarans are capable of speeds exceeding 100 kph (60 mph).<\/p>\n<p>The Black Foils appeared to lose control before crashing into the French team, whose driver Quentin Delapierre said it happened too quickly for him to steer clear.<\/p>\n<p>It was the New Zealanders&#8217; second crash in two races of the new season, having collided with the Swiss boat in Perth last month.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/4KIDF4M_241013AmCupFinals_17_jpg.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"700\" alt=\"New Zealand sailor Blair Tuke.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nNew Zealand sailor Blair Tuke.<br \/>\nPhoto: Georgia Schofield \/ www.photosport.nz\n<\/p>\n<p>Burling said the Auckland crash was still under review while giving positive news about Sinclair&#8217;s surgery.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s been through surgery now and has had a really good outcome there.
