Michael Burry isn\u2019t afraid to go against the herd.<\/p>\n
The hedge fund manager famously bet against the U.S. housing market ahead of the 2008 crash \u2014 earning $100 million for himself and $725 million for his investors \u2014 a move later profiled in the hit movie \u201cThe Big Short\u201d (1).<\/p>\n
Now, he\u2019s raising alarms again.<\/p>\n
\u201cSometimes, we see bubbles,\u201d Burry wrote on X in late 2025. \u201cSometimes, there is something to do about it. Sometimes, the only winning move is not to play\u201d (2).<\/p>\n
Yet this time, he is playing.<\/p>\n
In a 13F filing in early November, Burry\u2019s firm, Scion Asset Management, revealed bearish positions against two of the market\u2019s hottest names (3).<\/p>\n
Scion disclosed put options on 1,0000,000 shares of Nvidia (NVDA) and 5,000,000 shares of Palantir (PLTR) as of Sept. 30.<\/p>\n
A put option gives the holder the right \u2014 but not the obligation \u2014 to sell a stock at a set strike price before expiration, a strategy typically used when an investor expects the stock\u2019s price to decline.<\/p>\n
Nvidia has become the chipmaker of choice in the AI race \u2014 and a Wall Street idol. Its shares surged 41% as of late 2025 and an eye-popping 1,240% over the past five years, briefly reaching a $5-trillion valuation in October (4).<\/p>\n
Palantir \u2014 a fast-rising data and software powerhouse \u2014 is another darling of the AI boom. And though share prices skyrocketed in 2025, they lost momentum recently (5).<\/p>\n
While Scion\u2019s filing doesn\u2019t include the strike prices, expiration dates or premiums paid for those options contracts, the underlying shares tied to these put positions carried a combined notional value of nearly $1.1 billion.<\/p>\n
Burry himself even leaned into the drama \u2014 pairing his \u201cbubble\u201d comments with a photo of Christian Bale portraying him in \u201cThe Big Short.\u201d<\/p>\n
Not everyone is impressed. Palantir CEO Alex Karp fired back on CNBC.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe two companies he\u2019s shorting are the ones making all the money, which is super weird,\u201d Karp said (6). \u201cThe idea that chips and ontology is what you want to short is bats\u2014 crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Still, concerns about speculation in the AI trade are bubbling up elsewhere. Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon recently warned that \u201ca bunch of the capital that\u2019s being deployed [in AI] will actually not produce any returns (7)\u201d.<\/p>\n
In fact, both Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley have recently warned of a potential market correction, with Goldman forecasting a possible 10%\u201320% drawdown in stocks sometime in the next 12 to 24 months (6).<\/p>\n
More recently, Burry predicted that Google’s parent company, Alphabet, would see its share price crater after the company announced it would issue a 100-year bond.<\/p>\n
\u201cLast time this happened was Motorola in 1997, which was the last year Motorola was considered a big deal,\u201d he wrote (8).<\/p>\n
Burry is also warning investors against taking too big a position on Bitcoin. The beleaguered cryptocurrency has been shedding $1 trillion in value over the last several months, and Burry believes it\u2019s about to \u201cdeath spiral\u201d (9).<\/p>\n
