{"id":287646,"date":"2026-02-17T03:13:10","date_gmt":"2026-02-17T03:13:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/287646\/"},"modified":"2026-02-17T03:13:10","modified_gmt":"2026-02-17T03:13:10","slug":"wanakas-wild-west-ranch-on-the-market-for-4m-after-loved-ones-death-all-things-property-under-oneroof","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/287646\/","title":{"rendered":"W\u0101naka\u2019s Wild West ranch on the market for $4m after loved one\u2019s death, All things property, under OneRoof"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8211; Mike Wight and his late partner, Sandra Tumaru, built a Wild West-inspired home in W\u0101naka using recycled materials.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; The three-bedroom home features unique elements like antique tractor seats and saloon doors.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; The property, listed for $3.5m to $4m, is described as \u201cmore than a house\u201d by agent Luc Ravel.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a slice of the Wild West, but in W\u0101naka.<\/p>\n<p>Owner Mike Wight and his late partner, Sandra Tumaru, built their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneroof.co.nz\/property\/central-otago-lakes-district\/albert-town\/9-balneaves-lane\/pl0F5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">frontier home<\/a> after an inspiring tour of the United States on their Harley Davidson motorcycles.  <\/p>\n<p>They were taken by the ranches they saw in Santa Fe, and saw a chance to bring some of that cowboy spirit to Albert Town. <\/p>\n<p>Wight and Tumaru, the former a furniture finisher, the latter a postie, had been collecting recycled materials for several years, and used all of it in their new build.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019d been collecting bridge beams, telephone poles, timber for flooring, ceilings, things like that,\u201d Wight said. <\/p>\n<p>Once they\u2019d settled on an approximate design, the couple approached W\u0101naka-based Strawmark to do the straw-bale build. \u201cWe just did all the donkey work,\u201d Wight said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"9 Balneaves Lane, in Albert Town, W\u0101naka, is up for grabs. Photo \/ Supplied<\/p>\n<p>The three-bedroom, two-bathroom home they created on their 4023sqm plot of land at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneroof.co.nz\/property\/central-otago-lakes-district\/albert-town\/9-balneaves-lane\/pl0F5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">9 Balneaves Lane<\/a> has multiple living areas, including a media room and a loft with built-in beds for seven. There are several outbuildings on the ranch, including a two-car garage housing the couple\u2019s collectible cars, and two railway carriages that had once been part of the Otago rail network.  <\/p>\n<p>Wight said the couple travelled around the South Island for their salvage quest. \u201cIt was just amazing, the amount of stuff that all of a sudden turned up and was for sale,\u201d he said. \u201cLike a house load of doors we got from Christchurch cobber [friend] of mine. He was pulling down an old house, so we took all the doors. We went to an auction in Luggate and bought a whole lot of bridge beams. They were from a bridge in Palmerston. We hadn\u2019t even designed a house at that stage, so we just stored them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe got some old doors that were from India. We got them from a second-hand place in Dunedin that\u2019s since closed down. We had the doors made wider and taller to use as the front doors. The same breakfast bar has antique tractor seats attached to pipes made by Wight\u2019s brother-in-law.<\/p>\n<p>Not everything is antique. Many of the features, such as the saloon doors into the bedroom, were purpose-built for the property.  <\/p>\n<p>Wight, 60, said he made the difficult decision to sell following the death of Tumaru. Photo \/ Supplied<\/p>\n<p>New Zealand Sotheby\u2019s International Realty agent Luc Ravel said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneroof.co.nz\/property\/central-otago-lakes-district\/albert-town\/9-balneaves-lane\/pl0F5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">guide price for the property was $3.5m to $4m<\/a>, well above the RV of $2.5m, which he said did not reflect the property\u2019s true value.<\/p>\n<p>He said the house would appeal to those looking for something a bit different. \u201cIt\u2019s more than a house,\u201d Ravel said. \u201cIt\u2019s a piece of art. There are heaps of fine details. Even something as simple as the straw bale windows were made out of gears from an old tractor.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Revel said he had a potential buyer fly from Cairns just before the listing went live. \u201cWe\u2019ve got another viewing booked for the 26th from another couple in Australia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>9 Balneaves Lane isn\u2019t the only Wild West-style home to attract attention in recent months. Last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneroof.co.nz\/news\/tiny-towns-wild-west-quarter-snapped-up-after-agent-gets-calls-from-around-the-world-47951\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">OneRoof reported<\/a> the sale of two historic buildings with a bit of cowboy charm in the tiny North Island town of Mangaweka.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"9 Balneaves Lane, in Albert Town, W\u0101naka, is up for grabs. Photo \/ Supplied<\/p>\n<p>The properties, which looked as if they\u2019d been teleported from the Wild West, were snapped up after the listing agent was inundated with calls from around New Zealand and overseas. <\/p>\n<p>More than 100km north of Mangaweka is a better-known example of wild west real estate, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneroof.co.nz\/property\/central-north-island\/ruapehu-king-country-surrounds\/440-crotons-road\/HurYC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mellonsfolly Ranch<\/a>, a replica cowboy town which was withdrawn from the market last year after a near-five-year search for new owners.<\/p>\n<p>Bayleys listing agent Knud Bukholt said he has received interest from around the world, but not at the level required for a sale.<\/p>\n<p>Back in the South Island, buyers can pick up an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneroof.co.nz\/news\/entire-new-zealand-village-for-sale-again-got-a-spare-2-9m-46897\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">entire lakeside village<\/a> in North Otago for just over $2.9m.
