A faulty hot\u2011water cylinder ignited a fast\u2011moving blaze that destroyed a two\u2011storey home<\/a> in Mount Maunganui.<\/p>\n

Fire and Emergency NZ said crews were called to the Golf Rd property shortly after 7am on February 16.<\/p>\n

Firefighters from Mount Maunganui, Tauranga and Greerton stations responded.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson said the fire spread with remarkable speed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWithin four minutes it went from being discovered to fully involved,\u201d they told NZME.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen crews arrived, the two\u2011storey house was already well ablaze. Firefighters managed to contain the flames to the house and fully extinguished the fire by 11am.\u201d<\/p>\n

The home was extensively damaged.<\/p>\n

The occupants, who were awake at the time, smelled smoke and fled the property.<\/p>\n

The house had working smoke alarms in place.<\/p>\n

Fire and Emergency later confirmed the cause was a faulty hot\u2011water cylinder.<\/p>\n

FENZ issues safety reminder<\/p>\n

Fire and Emergency is urging people to call 111 immediately if they detect a fire and to \u201cget low, get out and stay out\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cFire moves extremely fast \u2014 it can become deadly within three minutes,\u201d the spokesperson said. \u201cWorking smoke alarms are essential, and every household needs an escape plan to get out safely.\u201d<\/p>\n
