{"id":288503,"date":"2026-02-17T16:34:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-17T16:34:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/288503\/"},"modified":"2026-02-17T16:34:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-17T16:34:07","slug":"tv-viewing-scores-12-month-high-in-january-2026-nielsen-gauge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/288503\/","title":{"rendered":"TV Viewing Scores 12-Month High in January 2026 Nielsen Gauge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tJanuary is usually a big month for TV viewing, and the first month of 2026 was no exception.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tTV use in the United States reached its highest level in January since \u2026 January 2025, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/nielsen\/\" id=\"auto-tag_nielsen_1\" data-tag=\"nielsen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nielsen<\/a>\u2019s monthly Gauge report. Across all platforms, viewing rose by 3.7 percent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/christmas-2025-biggest-us-streaming-day-ever-1236477751\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">from December<\/a>, with cable and broadcast growing at even higher rates than that. As a result, the two linear platforms increased their share of overall use some, while streaming \u2014\u00a0which grew by 2.7 percent month to month \u2014 fell off slightly in share from December\u2019s all-time high.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tStreaming still had a large plurality of all TV viewing with 47 percent of the total, vs. 47.5 percent in December. The series finale of Netflix\u2019s Stranger Things, which debuted Dec. 31 (and is included in Nielsen\u2019s January reporting period, which covers Dec. 29, 2025-Jan. 25, 2026), was a big part of that. The finale and the show as a whole drew 15.4 billion minutes of viewing time over those four weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tCable bounced back some from an all-time low of 20.2 percent of all viewing in December to come in at 21.2 percent. The College Football Playoff, capped by an audience of 30.1 million viewers for the Jan. 19 title game, and a deluge of big news pushed sports and news viewing up by 49 percent and 13 percent, respectively. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/espn\/\" id=\"auto-tag_espn_1\" data-tag=\"espn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ESPN<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/fox-news\/\" id=\"auto-tag_fox-news_1\" data-tag=\"fox-news\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fox News<\/a> each accounted for 2.2 percent of all TV use during the month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBroadcast outlets had 21.5 percent of viewing in January, up slightly from 21.4 percent in December. The close of the NFL regular season and the playoffs drove big audiences to broadcasters, as did the return of a number of network dramas from their end-of-year breaks. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAmong individual streaming services, YouTube remained the clear leader with 12.5 percent of all TV use, off slightly from 12.7 percent the previous month.
