Here&#8217;s what happened during today&#8217;s annular solar eclipse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"1a8ece2d-9b4d-4816-9922-d883c345a05f\">A magnificent annular solar eclipse just swept over Antarctica, putting on an impressive display of orbital mechanics as the moon passed in front of the sun at the perfect distance from Earth to create a fiery halo in a darkened sky \u200a\u2014\u200a at least for the few souls lucky enough to be in a position to see it.<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/solar-eclipses\/annular-solar-eclipse-2026-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-ring-of-fire\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/solar-eclipses\/annular-solar-eclipse-2026-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-ring-of-fire\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/solar-eclipses\/annular-solar-eclipse-2026-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-ring-of-fire\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Feb. 17&#8217;s annular solar eclipse<\/a> occurred as the lunar disk slipped between <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the sun<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a> during its <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17561-new-moon-explained-lunar-phases.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17561-new-moon-explained-lunar-phases.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17561-new-moon-explained-lunar-phases.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new moon<\/a> phase. The alignment occurred as <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the moon<\/a> travelled through a distant point in its elliptical orbit, making it appear smaller than usual in Earth&#8217;s sky.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"1a8ece2d-9b4d-4816-9922-d883c345a05f-2\">Today&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15584-solar-eclipses.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15584-solar-eclipses.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15584-solar-eclipses.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">eclipse<\/a> got underway at 4:56 a.m. EST (0956 GMT), as the moon took an ever greater bite out of the solar disk, transforming its burning orb into a glowing crescent, before finally diving entirely within its fiery expanse. The moon \u2014 appearing fractionally smaller than usual \u2014 was unable to cover the entirety of the sun&#8217;s disk, leaving a thin sliver of its outer edge visible to surround Earth&#8217;s natural satellite to create a ring in the skies over Antarctica.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"78988add-a3e4-4831-b0a9-ecfc401cf607\">This phase \u2014 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/solar-eclipses\/heres-what-will-happen-during-each-phase-of-the-feb-17-ring-of-fire-annular-solar-eclipse\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/solar-eclipses\/heres-what-will-happen-during-each-phase-of-the-feb-17-ring-of-fire-annular-solar-eclipse\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/solar-eclipses\/heres-what-will-happen-during-each-phase-of-the-feb-17-ring-of-fire-annular-solar-eclipse\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">known as annularity<\/a> \u2014 lasted a little over two minutes and was visible across a remote, 383-mile-wide (616 kilometer) corridor of the Antarctic continent containing the Concordia research station, which hosts less than a hundred scientists and visitors at any one time.<\/p>\n<p>A lesser partial eclipse was estimated to have been visible to roughly 176 million people \u2014 or 2% of the world&#8217;s population \u2014 spread across the southern tip of South America and southern African nations including Madagascar, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/eclipse\/globe\/2026-february-17\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/eclipse\/globe\/2026-february-17\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to Time and Date<\/a>.
