Their first calf \u2013 Lorelei, born on 3 May 1975 \u2013 is believed to be the first manatee conceived and born while in human care.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/lorelei-the-first-calf-of-romeo-and-juliet-born-in-1975.jpg\" alt=\"lorelei-the-first-calf-of-romeo-and-juliet-born-in-1975\" width=\"543\" height=\"362\"\/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Romeo and Juliet&#8217;s first calf, Lorelei, born at the Miami Seaquarium in 1975<\/p>\n<p>Romeo\u2019s partner Juliet also reached an impressive age, certainly in excess of 65 years old when she passed away in April 2024 at Zoo Tampa.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/oldest-manatee-romeo-is-at-least-71-years-old-in-2026.jpg\" alt=\"oldest-manatee-romeo-is-at-least-71-years-old-in-2026\" width=\"543\" height=\"362\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Romeo has been described as a laidback, gentle giant. He loves grazing along the lettuce forage feeders that rest on the bottom of his habitat, known as <a href=\"https:\/\/gulfarium.com\/manatees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Manatee Cove<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He can almost always be found napping promptly at 2 p.m. near his favourite rock, often snuggled up with his best buddy Lil Joe (who is a sprightly 37-year-old manatee). They also share their home with Inigo, who is estimated to be around 10.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/oldest-manatee-romeo-with-fellow-manatee-lil-joe.jpg\" alt=\"oldest-manatee-romeo-with-fellow-manatee-lil-joe\" width=\"543\" height=\"362\"\/><\/p>\n<p>GWR was told by staff at the Gulfarium that his favourite foods are romaine lettuce, apples and small pieces of sweet potato.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/oldest-manatee-romeo-new-home-since-2025-manatee-cove-at-the-gulfarium.jpg\" alt=\"Romeo's new home since june 2025 has been Manatee Cover at the Gulfarium\" width=\"543\" height=\"362\"\/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/oldest-manatee-romeo-new-home-since-2025-manatee-cove-at-the-gulfarium-marine-park.jpg\" alt=\"oldest-manatee-romeo-new-home-since-2025-manatee-cove-at--the-gulfarium-park\" width=\"543\" height=\"362\"\/>Since June 2025, Romeo has lived at Manatee Cove at the Gulfarium on Okaloosa Island<\/p>\n<p>While it isn\u2019t unheard of for manatees to live into their 60s, their more typical lifespan is between 30 and 40 years old. Their longevity tends to be particularly curtailed in the wild\u00a0where they face a number of serious threats such as habitat destruction, pollution and injuries\/fatalities caused by watercraft in their\u00a0native rivers, bays and seagrass meadows of south-east USA.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to Romeo, the oldest manatee ever as recognized by GWR was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guinnessworldrecords.com\/news\/2017\/7\/snooty-the-worlds-oldest-manatee-dies-aged-69-483108\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Snooty <\/a>(USA, b. 21 July 1948).<\/p>\n<p>He passed away aged 69 years 2 days on 23 July 2017.
