February&#8217;s new moon phase occurred at 7:01 a.m. EST (1201 GMT), heralding the onset of a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/solar-eclipses\/a-ring-of-fire-just-appeared-in-the-sky-over-antarctica-heres-what-happened-during-todays-annular-solar-eclipse\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/solar-eclipses\/a-ring-of-fire-just-appeared-in-the-sky-over-antarctica-heres-what-happened-during-todays-annular-solar-eclipse\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/solar-eclipses\/a-ring-of-fire-just-appeared-in-the-sky-over-antarctica-heres-what-happened-during-todays-annular-solar-eclipse\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spectacular annular solar eclipse<\/a> visible across a swathe of Antarctica, as the lunar disk passed in front of the sun, leaving only the &#8220;ring of fire&#8221; of its outer edge on display.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"6ec128c4-9cbb-44c5-8e71-31e8065661d7-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Sadly, unless you&#8217;re a penguin or an Antarctic researcher, you were unlikely to catch the eclipse for yourself today. Still, the new moon offers several nights of pristinely dark moonless skies, so grab your telescope and join us on a sightseeing tour of the mid-February night sky.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-8b6f1d37-1177-4514-9184-b486ac8b96dd\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>Visible planets<\/p>\n<p id=\"e77a1ef8-17c0-4130-82d0-7815728a1421\"><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/36-mercury-the-suns-closest-planetary-neighbor.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/36-mercury-the-suns-closest-planetary-neighbor.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/36-mercury-the-suns-closest-planetary-neighbor.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mercury<\/a> will shine low in the west in the hour following sunset on Feb. 17, appearing as a bright &#8220;<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/31851-what-is-morning-star-evening-star.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/31851-what-is-morning-star-evening-star.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/31851-what-is-morning-star-evening-star.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">evening star<\/a>&#8221; less than 20 degrees above the horizon. If you&#8217;re incredibly lucky \u2014 and have a clear view of the western horizon \u2014 then you may be able to spot the steady light of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/44-venus-second-planet-from-the-sun-brightest-planet-in-solar-system.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/44-venus-second-planet-from-the-sun-brightest-planet-in-solar-system.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/44-venus-second-planet-from-the-sun-brightest-planet-in-solar-system.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Venus<\/a> vying for attention in the glow of the setting sun below Mercury on Feb. 17, before it follows our parent star swiftly out of sight.<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/48-saturn-the-solar-systems-major-ring-bearer.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/48-saturn-the-solar-systems-major-ring-bearer.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/48-saturn-the-solar-systems-major-ring-bearer.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Saturn<\/a> will be visible less than 15 degrees to the upper left of Mercury. Its iconic rings are finally starting to reveal themselves after <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/saturns-rings-will-seem-to-disappear-on-nov-23-heres-how-to-catch-the-illusion\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/saturns-rings-will-seem-to-disappear-on-nov-23-heres-how-to-catch-the-illusion\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/saturns-rings-will-seem-to-disappear-on-nov-23-heres-how-to-catch-the-illusion\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">seeming to &#8220;disappear&#8221; in November<\/a> last year, when they turned edge-on in relation to Earth, making them appear as little more than a thin line.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-698774b1-c95c-42ed-aa6c-64d7493744dc\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s best Celestron NexStar 8SE deals<\/p>\n<p id=\"0c0dd4ba-4709-476b-9a13-43118aa01c39\">Dark nights around the new moon phase are the perfect time to hunt twinkling <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15722-constellations.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15722-constellations.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15722-constellations.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">constellations<\/a> through the winter sky. (Image credit: Created by Anthony Wood in Canva.)<\/p>\n<p id=\"ab07fedd-60ae-48f3-8956-2a3c9ed01e3c\">Both stellar hounds hunt the night sky alongside their master, the hunter depicted in the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16659-constellation-orion.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16659-constellation-orion.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16659-constellation-orion.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">constellation Orion<\/a>, the colorful stars of which can be spotted to the upper right of Sirius in the hours following sunset on Feb. 17.<\/p>\n<p>Look out for the red giant star <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22009-betelgeuse.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22009-betelgeuse.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22009-betelgeuse.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Betelgeuse<\/a>, which marks the right shoulder of Orion and the blue supergiant Rigel, which marks the left foot. Between are the three familiar points of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/28072-orions-belt.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/28072-orions-belt.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/28072-orions-belt.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Orion&#8217;s Belt<\/a>, and hanging below that is the milky light of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/orion-nebula\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/orion-nebula\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/orion-nebula\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Orion Nebula<\/a> \u2014 a colossal stellar nursery that orbits within the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19915-milky-way-galaxy.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19915-milky-way-galaxy.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19915-milky-way-galaxy.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Milky Way<\/a> roughly 1,500 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/light-year.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/light-year.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/light-year.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">light-years<\/a> from Earth.<\/p>\n<p>To the right of Orion will be the red light of Aldebaran, the star which marks the eye of the great bull in the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17101-taurus-constellation.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17101-taurus-constellation.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17101-taurus-constellation.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">constellation Taurus<\/a>. Notice a hazy patch of light to the upper right of Aldebaran? (Image credit: Created by Anthony Wood in Canva)<\/p>\n<p id=\"cd00ca99-a13b-41ed-8078-6f40c352f397\">Next, look to the northeast to find the seven stars of the &#8220;<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27758-big-dipper.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27758-big-dipper.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27758-big-dipper.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Big Dipper<\/a>&#8221; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/what-is-an-asterism\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/what-is-an-asterism\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/what-is-an-asterism\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asterism<\/a> standing on its end close to the horizon. Locate the two uppermost stars \u2014 Merak and Dubhe \u2014 and draw an imaginary line from the former through the latter and out into space. The next bright star you find will be Polaris, the &#8220;<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15567-north-star-polaris.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15567-north-star-polaris.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15567-north-star-polaris.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">North Star<\/a>&#8220;, around which the entire sky appears to revolve.<\/p>\n<p>Continue following that line and look slightly higher to find the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29132-cassiopeia-the-banished-queen-of-constellations.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29132-cassiopeia-the-banished-queen-of-constellations.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29132-cassiopeia-the-banished-queen-of-constellations.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">five bright stars of Cassiopeia<\/a>, arrayed in a zig-zagging formation reminiscent of a sideways &#8220;W&#8221;, or &#8220;M&#8221;, which is said to portray a queen who was cast into the stars after falling foul of the Greek god Poseidon. <\/p>\n<p>Want to get a closer look at the night sky?
