{"id":289298,"date":"2026-02-18T03:28:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-18T03:28:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/289298\/"},"modified":"2026-02-18T03:28:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T03:28:07","slug":"stormy-snowy-winter-for-hokkaido","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/289298\/","title":{"rendered":"Stormy, Snowy Winter for Hokkaido"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On February 5, 2026, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/modis.gsfc.nasa.gov\/about\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">MODIS<\/a>\u00a0(Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) on NASA\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/terra\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Terra<\/a>\u00a0satellite acquired this image of snow-covered landscapes across Hokkaido. With more than\u00a031 active volcanoes, the island features several large caldera lakes, including at least five that are visible in the image. (Calderas\u00a0are large depressions formed by volcanic eruptions.) In the east, forested windbreaks around Nakashibetsu form a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/a-windbreak-grid-in-hokkaido-146664\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">checkerboard pattern<\/a>, while to the north, swirls of drifting sea ice adorn the Sea of Okhotsk.<\/p>\n<p>Northern Japan, especially the island of Hokkaido, is home to some of the snowiest cities in the world. However, despite the region\u2019s familiarity with heavy snowfall, winter 2026 got off to a disruptive start.
