(Image credit: Space Studies Institute)<a id=\"elk-fb060709-2dbc-4912-ba9e-c2f4db937246\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>Mass drivers<\/p>\n<p id=\"9d618385-643a-4153-8e41-a5c0b7ed2fa8\">Musk isn&#8217;t the first person to propose the use of mass drivers \u2014 which are basically railguns \u2014 on the moon. He&#8217;s following in the footsteps of space visionary Gerard O&#8217;Neill, who floated the idea back in 1974.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mass drivers&#8221; based on a coilgun design can be adapted to accelerate a non-magnetic object. One application O&#8217;Neill proposed for mass drivers: toss baseball-sized chunks of ore mined from the surface of the moon into space. Once in space, the ore could be used as raw material for building space colonies and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-solar-power-satellite-beams-energy-1st-time\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-solar-power-satellite-beams-energy-1st-time\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-solar-power-satellite-beams-energy-1st-time\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar power satellites<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>O&#8217;Neill worked on mass drivers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), along with colleague Henry Kolm and a group of student volunteers to construct their first mass driver prototype.<\/p>\n<p>Backed by grants from the Space Studies Institute, later prototypes improved on the concept, showing that a mass driver only 520 feet (160 meters) long could boost material off the lunar surface.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>Kolm, O&#8217;Neil, and the student researchers demonstrated a laboratory system that they believed could scale to an operational lunar mass driver several kilometers long to deliver 600,000 tons per year to one of the Earth-moon <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/30302-lagrange-points.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/30302-lagrange-points.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/30302-lagrange-points.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lagrange points<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-060028b9-5d0e-4a45-932a-0d8b5e6a9ccf\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>Superior choice<\/p>\n<p id=\"4a8adcad-3fab-4f55-ac84-a6456b235428\">Robert Peterkin of General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems bolstered the promise of lunar-based mass drivers more recently. In 2023, he filed a report to the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) titled &#8220;Lunar Electromagnetic Launch for Resource Exploitation to Enhance National Security and Economic Growth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A modern <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/electromagnetic-launch-moon-mass-drive\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/electromagnetic-launch-moon-mass-drive\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/electromagnetic-launch-moon-mass-drive\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">electromagnetic launcher<\/a> is a superior choice, because it can use abundant solar energy as a prime energy source instead of importing chemical rocket fuel from Earth,&#8221; Peterkin told Space.com.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The U.S. government should fund an evolution of the existing <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electromagnetic_Aircraft_Launch_System\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electromagnetic_Aircraft_Launch_System\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">electromagnetic aircraft launch system<\/a>, now operating reliably on the U.S. Navy&#8217;s Gerald R. (Image credit: LPI)<a id=\"elk-3d8f2341-6419-4e84-961a-70aeb60b1ce4\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>Lunar ecosystem<\/p>\n<p id=\"75ca2c34-cb8d-4781-83bc-990a04ee0337\">&#8220;Undoubtedly, the first spiral of a development cycle for a lunar ecosystem will rely on supply of machinery, structures and supporting systems from the Earth,&#8221; Peterkin wrote in his AFOSR report.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A SpaceX Starship with the ability to deliver 100 metric tons to the lunar surface will be a true enabler,&#8221; he added. &#8220;SpaceX and NASA are developing plans to establish a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/moon\/a-city-on-the-moon-why-spacex-shifted-its-focus-away-from-mars\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/moon\/a-city-on-the-moon-why-spacex-shifted-its-focus-away-from-mars\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/moon\/a-city-on-the-moon-why-spacex-shifted-its-focus-away-from-mars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lunar base<\/a> of operations, and we recommend that this base be selected to allow for a reliable and enabling lunar electromagnetic launch system.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Underscored in the 30-page document is that the moon is rich in useful resources, including silicon, titanium, aluminum and iron.
