{"id":290226,"date":"2026-02-18T17:04:21","date_gmt":"2026-02-18T17:04:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/290226\/"},"modified":"2026-02-18T17:04:21","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T17:04:21","slug":"man-charged-with-mt-maunganui-landslide-cordon-breach-others-sought-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/290226\/","title":{"rendered":"Man charged with Mt Maunganui landslide cordon breach, others sought"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A man has been arrested and charged after allegedly entering the Mount Maunganui landslide zone, which is cordoned off to the public.<\/p>\n<p>The cordon had remained in place for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1news.co.nz\/2026\/02\/02\/area-around-mt-maunganui-slip-to-open-when-safe-mayor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">public safety<\/a> after six people died when a section of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1news.co.nz\/2026\/02\/01\/recovery-operation-at-mt-maunganui-concludes-11-days-after-landslide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mauao hillside collapsed<\/a>, sending a landslide into the Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park and the Mount Hot Pools about 9.30am on January 22.<\/p>\n<p>Western Bay of Plenty Area Commander Inspector Clifford Paxton said police were notified that a man had allegedly entered the landslide zone about 2.30am today. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text-greyDarkFaded\">A month on from the Mt Maunganui landslip disaster, the area around it remains cordoned off and in limbo. (Source: NZ Police) (Source: Supplied)<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, police were seeking help to identify three people photographed allegedly breaching the landslide cordon on two other occasions. <\/p>\n<p>The reported incidents occurred on Wednesday, February 11 and Sunday, February 15.<\/p>\n<p>One of the men was wearing a black t-shirt, blue denim shorts and sporting distinctive tattoos on his forearm.<\/p>\n<p>A second man was wearing a pair of sunglasses, a white t-shirt, light-coloured shorts, and a black bag. <\/p>\n<p>The third had a blue cap, a light-coloured t-shirt with a blue logo emblazoned on the front, and light-coloured shorts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you are one of these people, or you recognise them, please update us through 105 either online or over the phone,&#8221; police said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1771434261_429_three-people-sought-over-alleged-mount-maunganui-landslide-c-3BAU5FZT7RBPRIXSOH2QIQJ3JM.jpg\" alt=\"Three people sought over alleged Mount Maunganui landslide cordon breaches.
