{"id":290713,"date":"2026-02-18T23:55:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-18T23:55:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/290713\/"},"modified":"2026-02-18T23:55:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T23:55:09","slug":"see-the-moons-shadow-darken-antarctica-in-epic-satellite-imagery-of-the-feb-17-solar-eclipse-video","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/290713\/","title":{"rendered":"See the moon&#8217;s shadow darken Antarctica in epic satellite imagery of the Feb. 17 solar eclipse (video)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"182706d1-4bcf-4a83-ba08-eb594c00c88f\">Satellites have captured incredible views of the Feb. 17 annular solar eclipse as the moon&#8217;s shadow swept across a remote region of Antarctica, while at the same time a U.S. weather satellite captured the silhouette of Earth&#8217;s satellite as it traversed across the face of the sun.<\/p>\n<p>An <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/solar-eclipses\/annular-solar-eclipse-2026-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-ring-of-fire\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/solar-eclipses\/annular-solar-eclipse-2026-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-ring-of-fire\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/solar-eclipses\/annular-solar-eclipse-2026-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-ring-of-fire\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">annular solar eclipse<\/a> takes place when <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the moon<\/a> \u2014 at a distant point in its elliptical orbit \u2014 passes between the sun and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a>, blocking the vast majority of its surface while leaving a thin sliver of its outer disk visible to appear as a burning halo in the sky.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"182706d1-4bcf-4a83-ba08-eb594c00c88f-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Sadly, the only humans on hand to see the full glory of the Feb. 17 &#8220;ring of fire&#8221; eclipse were those who were crewing isolated research stations in a 383-mile-wide (616 kilometer) swathe of Antarctica.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"faafbd6f-7203-4586-b4bf-1be6cd211838\">Thankfully for us in warmer locations, a number of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24839-satellites.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24839-satellites.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24839-satellites.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">satellites<\/a> were able to witness the enormity of the event from orbit, including spacecraft from the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (Eumetsat), which captured imagery of the moon&#8217;s shadow (above) as it swept over the frozen continent.<\/p>\n<p>The moon&#8217;s immense shadow was also spied by South Korea&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/ariane-5-rocket-jcsat17-korean-satellite-launch-success.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/ariane-5-rocket-jcsat17-korean-satellite-launch-success.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/ariane-5-rocket-jcsat17-korean-satellite-launch-success.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GEO-KOMPSAT-2A<\/a> weather satellite from its perch 22,370 miles (36,000 km) above Earth in geostationary orbit, close to the shadowy line of the night-day terminator.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:58.63%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Tty9g8CHRVdQeyaDsyqunf.gif\" alt=\"An animated GIF showing the shadow of the moon sweeping over Earth's surface as the line separating night from day moves right to left.\" loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Tty9g8CHRVdQeyaDsyqunf.gif\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Tty9g8CHRVdQeyaDsyqunf.gif\" class=\"inline expandable\"\/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Tty9g8CHRVdQeyaDsyqunf.gif\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"expand-button icon-expand-image icon\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Tty9g8CHRVdQeyaDsyqunf.gif\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"><\/p>\n<p>The moon&#8217;s shadow passes over Antarctica during the Feb. 17 annular solar eclipse. Bright looping structures can be seen playing throughout the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17160-sun-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17160-sun-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17160-sun-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sun&#8217;s atmosphere<\/a> in the ultraviolet realm of the electromagnetic spectrum as plasma is shaped by our star&#8217;s strong <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/earths-magnetic-field-explained\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/earths-magnetic-field-explained\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/earths-magnetic-field-explained\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">magnetic field<\/a> while the moon&#8217;s silhouette roams left-to-right across the solar disk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:99.63%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/HCUt6NcbezkkCserBpqcAC.gif\" alt=\"The silhouette of the moon passes across the face of the sun during an eclipse.
