I asked myself: how did they get my phone number?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">She added: \u201cHe talked too fast. I said, \u2018Can you please slow down?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">The pensioner needed a lounge suite, she told the Herald, and she hoped to get it before Christmas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI asked him how much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">She said $50 a week was suggested but that was too much so they agreed on $30 a week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe did it on the phone \u2013 the contract, the payments. I said, \u2018Can you email me?\u2019 He said, \u2018I will\u2019, but that didn\u2019t happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">She added: \u201cI didn\u2019t contact him because everything was settled on the phone. He said after 23 payments he will deliver the lounge suite.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">So she kept on with the automatic payments, but after 20 payments decided to call him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI contacted him and then when I rang him with both numbers he gave me, and what I get is the phone is not in use anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">The 70-year-old figured she must have the wrong number.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">She said she tried for the next two days to contact HouseSmile but received no answer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">With $600 already spent and no sign of the lounge suite, she thought: \u201cOh my God, how can I contact him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">The CAB suggested she might have been scammed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI thought: \u2018What? Oh my God, I want my money back, this is a big loss for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">She felt betrayed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cHe talked nicely that day. I was very honest on my side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">She said she lost $720 before deleting the automatic payment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI was so frustrated and so angry,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI won\u2019t be doing this anymore. My daughter was telling me off. She said, \u2018Mum, I told you to talk to me before you do this kind of thing\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">Liquidator Pritesh Patel this week told the Herald he was fielding calls from victims <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/companies\/media-marketing\/tech-vault-ponzi-scheme-busted-liquidator-says-elderly-woman-with-dementia-among-cold-calling-victims\/premium\/FIUAEALQNNCZHLTGMX2YHV6CXI\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/companies\/media-marketing\/tech-vault-ponzi-scheme-busted-liquidator-says-elderly-woman-with-dementia-among-cold-calling-victims\/premium\/FIUAEALQNNCZHLTGMX2YHV6CXI\/\">complaining about \u201cthieving bastards\u201d who used cold calling<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">Patel said the business took money from customers through an intermediary company called Flo 2 Cash.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">Patel said it used these funds to fulfil previous customer orders in what he called a \u201cPonzi operation model\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">Tech Vault Enterprises, trading as HouseSmile, was incorporated in April 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">Rahil Munir Tharani of Hamilton is listed as the sole shareholder and director.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">This week he told the Herald he had severe health issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI\u2019m not good at the moment,\u201d he added. \u201cI don\u2019t know about Flo 2 Cash. They\u2019re a different entity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">The Commerce Commission said Tech Vault Enterprises, trading as HouseSmile, was fined $60,000 for unconscionable conduct.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">It said the conduct involved repeated unsolicited sales calls to an elderly woman suffering from dementia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">The company was also ordered to make a $7500 payment for emotional harm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">It said HouseSmile mostly sold household goods, such as electronics, exclusively on layby, meaning people made payments to secure an article for later purchase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">The commission said HouseSmile invited contact through Facebook advertisements or through its website. <\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIts sales agents would then phone consumers, and would also make unsolicited calls to customers on its database.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">Patel on Tuesday said Tharani was co-operating with liquidation proceedings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">His first liquidator\u2019s report, with a list of known creditors, can be <a href=\"https:\/\/app.companiesoffice.govt.nz\/companies\/app\/service\/services\/documents\/02D3B3818D9CC0AE40F8CAC409B2FC0F\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/app.companiesoffice.govt.nz\/companies\/app\/service\/services\/documents\/02D3B3818D9CC0AE40F8CAC409B2FC0F\">viewed at this Companies Office page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/author\/john-weekes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/author\/john-weekes\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Weekes<\/a> is a business journalist covering aviation and court.
