{"id":291717,"date":"2026-02-19T13:19:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-19T13:19:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/291717\/"},"modified":"2026-02-19T13:19:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-19T13:19:07","slug":"jim-chalmers-gets-nasty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/291717\/","title":{"rendered":"Jim Chalmers gets nasty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jim Chalmers&#8217; outburst on Wednesday \u2013 launching a deeply personal attack on former Reserve Bank governor Philip Lowe \u2013 was a lovely little glimpse into the Treasurer&#8217;s emotional fragility.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lowe had the temerity to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/policy\/economy\/lowe-s-stark-warning-to-labor-on-spending-growth-20260217-p5o2zx?ref=rampart.news\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">say<\/a> that &#8220;I hope the government turns out to be more ambitious than it currently looks like it will be because if\u2026 productivity growth remains weak, the supply capacity of the economy will remain weak\u2026 The government wants to keep spending and wants to keep offering people handouts, which adds to demand, which in the normal course of events would be fine. But if the supply is not growing, you can&#8217;t do it and if you try to do it then interest rates have to go up&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Lowe made these remarks in his capacity as the new chairman of the ASX&#8217;s corporate governance advisory body, a position for which, incidentally, his qualifications are virtually non-existent. Until barely two years ago, the bloke had never worked anywhere in his life except the RBA.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What Lowe is eminently qualified to do, however, is state the bleeding obvious about the maxed-out Australian economy. Indeed, the only economists not saying that Australia needs (and the Albanese government is failing to deliver) public expenditure restraint and productivity growth work at either the Australia Institute or the mealy-mouthed RBA. Lowe was making very similar observations to those also made this week by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theaustralian.com.au\/business\/bhp-lifts-dividend-as-interim-profit-reflects-copper-glow\/news-story\/e0b33bd8280c7cf12fd9bb39c6528aed?ref=rampart.news\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BHP chief executive Mike Henry<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/politics\/federal\/as-good-as-it-gets-nab-boss-issues-dire-living-standards-warning-20260218-p5o3el?ref=rampart.news\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Australia Bank CEO Andrew Irvine<\/a>.
