{"id":292634,"date":"2026-02-20T01:44:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-20T01:44:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/292634\/"},"modified":"2026-02-20T01:44:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-20T01:44:08","slug":"see-a-razor-thin-crescent-moon-shine-with-saturn-after-sunset-on-feb-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/292634\/","title":{"rendered":"See a razor-thin crescent moon shine with Saturn after sunset on Feb. 19"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"0e9574a3-eac1-45fb-a202-975e149bc44d\">Turn your eyes to the western sky at sunset on Feb. 19 to catch a delicate sight, as the razor-thin form of the two-day-old crescent moon sidles up to the gas giant Saturn in the evening sky.<\/p>\n<p>The 10%-lit waxing crescent moon will be easy to miss as it hangs low on the western horizon at sundown, with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/48-saturn-the-solar-systems-major-ring-bearer.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/48-saturn-the-solar-systems-major-ring-bearer.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/48-saturn-the-solar-systems-major-ring-bearer.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Saturn<\/a> appearing as a bright &#8220;<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/31851-what-is-morning-star-evening-star.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/31851-what-is-morning-star-evening-star.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/31851-what-is-morning-star-evening-star.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">evening star<\/a>&#8221; less than 5 degrees \u2014 roughly the width of your three middle fingers held at arm&#8217;s length \u2014 to the lower left of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a>&#8216;s natural satellite.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"0e9574a3-eac1-45fb-a202-975e149bc44d-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">You may notice a subtle glow infusing the shadowed expanse of the lunar disk as the sun sets further below the horizon. What you&#8217;re seeing is a phenomenon known as &#8220;Earthshine&#8221;, or the &#8220;Da Vinci Glow&#8221;, wherein light reflects off of Earth&#8217;s surface and onto the lunar disk during the days around the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17561-new-moon-explained-lunar-phases.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17561-new-moon-explained-lunar-phases.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17561-new-moon-explained-lunar-phases.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new moon<\/a> phase.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"d3aa1130-4b6f-46e6-a381-2a5511f380a6\">Try to find a clear view of the western horizon on Feb. 19 and look to the lower right of Saturn to spot <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/36-mercury-the-suns-closest-planetary-neighbor.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/36-mercury-the-suns-closest-planetary-neighbor.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/36-mercury-the-suns-closest-planetary-neighbor.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mercury<\/a>&#8216;s steady light hugging the horizon. If you&#8217;re incredibly lucky, you may also catch a glimpse of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/44-venus-second-planet-from-the-sun-brightest-planet-in-solar-system.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/44-venus-second-planet-from-the-sun-brightest-planet-in-solar-system.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/44-venus-second-planet-from-the-sun-brightest-planet-in-solar-system.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Venus<\/a>, even lower still, before it slips swiftly out of sight, bathed in the glare of the setting sun.<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/41-neptune-the-other-blue-planet-in-our-solar-system.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/41-neptune-the-other-blue-planet-in-our-solar-system.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/41-neptune-the-other-blue-planet-in-our-solar-system.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Neptune<\/a> will also be present \u2014 though far too dim to spot with the naked eye \u2014 between <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the moon<\/a> and Saturn, less than 2 degrees to the right of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/30372-gas-giants.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/30372-gas-giants.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/30372-gas-giants.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gas giant<\/a>.
