Eric Dane, best known for his roles on Grey\u2019s Anatomy and Euphoria has passed away at only 53 following a public battle with ALS. His family confirmed his death to People Magazine<\/a> with a statement: <\/p>\n

\u201cWith heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with\u00a0ALS<\/a>. He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dane was dealt a bad hand by fate, with the actor having really started to come into his own as a noted character actor following the success of\u00a0Euphoria, where he played Cal Jacobs, the deeply closeted father of Jacob Elordi\u2019s violent, homophobic Nate. Before that, Dane was best known for his long run on\u00a0Grey\u2019s Anatomy, where he played Dr. Mark Sloan, aka Dr. McSteamy, for 139 episodes over six seasons. While that was the role that put him on the map, Dane had been kicking around Hollywood for many years prior, having guest-starred on everything from\u00a0The Wonder Years,\u00a0Married\u2026 with Children, and\u00a0Saved by the Bell, among many others, before landing a recurring role on\u00a0Charmed. On the big screen, he played an important role in the cult classic horror film\u00a0Feast\u00a0and was also Multiple Man in\u00a0X-Men: The Last Stand.<\/p>\n

His success on\u00a0Grey\u2019s Anatomy\u00a0propelled him to roles in rom-coms like\u00a0Valentine\u2019s Day\u00a0and\u00a0Burlesque, before he took another lead role on TV\u2019s\u00a0The Last Ship, which ran for four seasons. Yet just when it seemed his career was winding down, Dane nabbed his role on\u00a0Euphoria. While initially portrayed as somewhat unsympathetic, showrunner Sam Levinson clearly noticed how compelling Dane had become in the role, with him taking on a more nuanced and expanded part in\u00a0Euphoria\u00a0Season 2. The performance earned him critical raves and seemed to kick off a second act in his career playing tough guys, with him portraying the villain in\u00a0Bad Boys: Ride or Die, as well as a more heroic role in the Samara Weaving-led\u00a0Borderline. He also co-starred on the Amazon Prime Video series\u00a0Countdown, which ran for a single season (you can see our interview with Dane embedded below).<\/p>\n

It was only ten months ago that Dane made his battle with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) public<\/a>, having first started to exhibit symptoms in the summer of 2024. By the time he went public, he had lost the function of his right arm and hand, but nevertheless he continued to act. He guest-starred on\u00a0Brilliant Minds\u00a0as a firefighter diagnosed with ALS, while also reprising his role as Cal in the upcoming third season of\u00a0Euphoria<\/a>, which begins airing in April. Hopefully, it proved to be a fitting finish to a career cut short far too early. Dane was married to actress Rebecca Gayheart, who was steadfast in her support throughout his illness, and he is survived by two daughters.<\/p>\n
