After 37 years, Star Trek<\/a> makes one of its biggest retcons yet involving Starfleet and the Borg. The Federation and the Borg have been bitter enemies since their first meeting. Only recently did the Federation obtain their final victory over the Borg Collective, seeming to end their threat once and for all.<\/p>\n

Yet as seen in season two of Star Trek: Picard, another faction of the Borg exists. Led by former human Agnes Jurati, the Borg Cooperative showed immense potential, promising to take the species in a bold, challenging new direction. Yet the Cooperative instead became one of Star Trek\u2019s many dropped plot lines.<\/p>\n

That was, until Star Trek: The Last Starship. This new comic series, set right after the catastrophic \u201cBurn,\u201d sees the Borg Cooperative reassert themselves by resurrecting Captain Kirk<\/a>. The Burn caused galactic civilization to fall, and Agnes and her Borg Cooperative saw Kirk as a potential rallying point for the Federation. Now, this relationship between the now-uneasy allies takes another turn.<\/p>\n

In Star Trek: The Last Starship #5, written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing and drawn by Adrian Bonilla, Agnes Jurati, in defending the Cooperative against the accusations of the Ferengi ambassador at a galactic peace conference, tells the delegates that it is as much as \u201cpart of the Federation\u201d as anyone else, and only wants what\u2019s best.<\/p>\n

This is a massive change in the status quo of both the Federation and the Borg. If there was one foe that was the antithesis of the Federation, it was the Borg. Both groups consisted of multiple species, but the similarities ended there. The Borg assimilated other species against their will into the Collective.<\/p>\n

The Borg and the Federation would often fight throughout the latter half of the 24th century. Indeed, the Borg were one of the gravest threats Starfleet ever faced, as the Collective nearly brought the Federation to its knees on several occasions. Yet the Burn, and the disintegration of galactic civilization, have made for strange allies. The Borg have not merely allied themselves with the Federation: they have gone so far as to join. The Borg Cooperative saw the potential for good at throwing their lot in with the Federation, and so far it was the right call.<\/p>\n

By having the Borg Cooperative join the Federation, the creative team behind The Last Starship are following up on one of the most intriguing of the many plotlines Star Trek: Picard left dangling. Writers Kelly and Lanzing and artist Bonilla have picked it up and taken it to new heights with The Last Starship.<\/p>\n

Naturally, this new status quo raises questions. First and foremost is: just how long can this last? Even though the Collective is a distant boogeyman for the crew of The Last Starship, the stories of their evil persist. One of the Babel Conference delegates even invokes this legacy when confronting Jurati. <\/p>\n

Will The Borg Remain in the Federation Long-Term?<\/p>\n

Another issue with the Borg\u2019s Federation membership that must be confronted is precisely this legacy. The Borg forced countless species into their Collective, compelling them to do horrible, unspeakable things. Much about the Borg Cooperative is still unknown, particularly how they gain new members. If they do in fact assimilate like the Collective, then the arrangement falls apart. <\/p>\n

If this happens, then chaos will reign in the Star Trek universe. If the Borg leave the Federation, then Captain Kirk and the crew of the Omega will have to fight a two-front war: to not only save the soul of the Federation, but fight the Borg as well.<\/p>\n
