Alexander, as a veteran director, writer, and actor, has come in contact with many familiar faces of the ton: She directed Emma Naomi (Alice Mondrich) in her first theater job, in a play called Deathwatch (\u201cShe was magnificent!\u201d she says), Victor Alli (John Stirling) in Richard III (\u201cJust splendid!\u201d), and season four leading man Luke Thompson (Benedict Bridgerton) for the queen\u2019s jubilee at the Royal Academy of Arts, where he recited a Tom Stoppard speech (\u201cIt was the only speech the queen actually stopped and listened to!\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>By luck or fate (or perhaps both), all these actors landed on the Netflix Regency-era romance series, and since its first season, Mrs. Wilson has been a steadfast presence on Bridgerton. This year, fans finally get a broader glimpse of Mrs. Wilson\u2019s world as the show expands its reach downstairs, revealing the lives of the ton\u2019s servants. Alexander played opposite Lauren Bacall in Sweet Bird of Youth and Vanessa Redgrave in The Tempest. Because she\u2019s a writer, director, and actor, her ability to create an entire backstory for Mrs. Wilson \u2014 who\u2019s not a character in Julia Quinn\u2019s Bridgerton book series \u2014 has given her a depth of character that we\u2019ve all come to respect. \u201cI wrote a whole thing,\u201d the actor tells Shondaland. \u201cA housekeeper\u2019s position is precarious. You can be sacked, you can mess up, but she\u2019s a housekeeper at probably the best house in the whole of the country. She has a quiet strength.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The actor keeps Mrs. Wilson\u2019s emotions locked down but always knows what\u2019s going on inside her heart and her head. \u201cShe\u2019s often watching the family, but she\u2019s not with them, so I think she could be a bit lonely,\u201d Alexander says. \u201cPeople say she\u2019s unflappable or impenetrable. But that\u2019s not because there\u2019s nothing going on for her. There\u2019s masses there, but she can\u2019t reveal it. She\u2019s got this rich inner life. She\u2019s human and has desires just the same as anyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here, Alexander discusses playing Mrs. Wilson, working with Ruth Gemmell, and why her character may be an early feminist.<\/p>\n<p>EMILY ZEMLER: What is your acting background?<\/p>\n<p>GERALDINE ALEXANDER: I went to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. I was there with Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, and Kathryn Hunter, and we\u2019re all still very much in touch with each other. Then I went to the Royal Shakespeare Company. I\u2019ve done a lot of Shakespeare \u2014 about 15 Shakespeare plays, probably more. When I graduated, there weren\u2019t many films being made here, so I went to France and made a few films there. But I mostly did theater. A lot of the Bridgerton actors \u2014 Ruth Gemmell, Golda Rosheuvel, Luke Thompson \u2014 we\u2019ve all come from theater. In season one, I walked in and was like, \u201cOh, hi.\u201d It was like being at the National Theatre. I\u2019ve also done a lot of period dramas, like Miss Marple, Poirot, and Hannay. At the time, those were all shot on film. I loved it. It was very quick because Mrs. Wilson was cast quite late. But it\u2019s been nice. She\u2019s not in the books, so I\u2019ve used the evidence of the scripts and built my own story. There was nice evidence in the script about how long she\u2019d been there and who she was and her status, but then I started digging about housekeepers. It was a great job for an independent woman. Or it\u2019s a great job if you\u2019re in the Bridgerton house.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve got a whole backstory for her. She has a very normal English accent, so that means she\u2019s from quite an upper-class family. Something\u2019s happened to her to not have married and to not have had kids, and to join this family. There\u2019s a secret there. So, when I\u2019m in those long scenes, when I\u2019m watching a ball or I\u2019m just observing, I\u2019ve got this secret all the time about who she really is. I hope it gives her an inner life because there\u2019s a lot of observing that happens in the role.<\/p>\n<p>EZ: She observes a lot.<\/p>\n<p>GA: She\u2019s got eyes in the back of her head. I find the idea of service really interesting. I think there are parallels with Brimsley. She\u2019s not living the life she wanted, but she\u2019s put everything into this life. She will do anything for that family, especially Violet, and I think that gives her happiness. That\u2019s where she finds her fulfillment. But I find it interesting that people don\u2019t ask her who she is. They don\u2019t ask servants, \u201cWhat do you think? Who are you?\u201d That\u2019s what\u2019s lovely about this season \u2014 there are a few moments where she says what she thinks.<\/p>\n<p>EZ: What did you enjoy about showing more of the downstairs life this season?<\/p>\n<p>GA: It\u2019s been heaven to show that side of Mrs. Wilson. You see her authority and how she chooses people. She\u2019s in charge of the money, she orders the food, she liaises with the maids. I have this chatelaine, which is a thing hanging from my belt, which has the keys to pantries and everything. She reads. She\u2019s really literate. So, she recognizes herself in Sophie. She goes, \u201cWho are you? You\u2019re literate, you\u2019re efficient, you\u2019re really good at your job.\u201d And she appreciates that. And the kitchen set is amazing.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s been lots of really interesting feedback. People love her. She\u2019s been like a swan or a submarine before \u2014 she\u2019s been there a lot, but people don\u2019t realize what she\u2019s thinking. Finally, in season four, she\u2019s been allowed to pop up. It\u2019s not that what we see in season four hasn\u2019t been happening throughout the other seasons \u2014 it\u2019s just not been witnessed. Every time she comes into a room and opens the door and is unflappable, she\u2019s been down there going, \u201cWhere are those cakes? Can you do that?\u201d I\u2019d been wearing the same uniform since season one. Everyone\u2019s changing clothes every five minutes, and I\u2019ve had the same costume. But finally in season four, I got a new costume.<\/p>\n<p>EZ: Mrs. Wilson has an amazing scene with Violet in part one where she gives her advice on having Marcus over for evening tea. What was that like to shoot?<\/p>\n<p>GA: Ruth and I get on really well. We\u2019re really good friends. That scene was beautifully directed. I think it\u2019s a surprise that Mrs. Wilson is not judgmental about it, because she can be quite judgmental about other things. But she gives her permission, saying, \u201cLife is to be lived.\u201d I think she\u2019s speaking for herself as well. It\u2019s a connection between two women who basically don\u2019t have a partner. She witnessed Violet lose the love of her life, and she said, \u201cNow is the time to look to the future and not be stuck in the past.\u201d It was lovely to do, but we did laugh a lot. And when Mrs. Wilson is standing out there guarding the door, we did that in lots of different ways. I had a book, and then I was listening, and then I was just standing there like a quiet guard.<\/p>\n<p>Being an older actress \u2014 and I\u2019m older than Ruth \u2014 I love when there\u2019s the opportunity to speak up for women who are past their 50s. People don\u2019t stop living. They\u2019ve got adventures, they\u2019ve got hopes, they\u2019ve got dreams. We all have. There\u2019s a small speech in the first season where she says, \u201cDo you think I have the time to go write books? I\u2019m a working woman. Where do you think I get that time from, Eloise?\u201d There\u2019s something in her that\u2019s quite interesting and political. I don\u2019t mean politics like politics but that she\u2019s finding early feminism. I think she sees it in Eloise. Being a housekeeper is a great position. It really suits her. She\u2019s found her place to be. Yes, she may not have a family or the things she may have wanted, but actually it\u2019s a good position for someone who is a budding feminist. They didn\u2019t talk like that in that time, so you might not put that term on it. But that\u2019s in her, and that\u2019s where a lot of her strength comes from.<\/p>\n<p>EZ: Has being part of Bridgerton changed your career?<\/p>\n<p>GA: It hasn\u2019t changed my career exactly, but it has changed me inside. It has made me hungry for more film and TV. I love it. I bought a van after the last season, and I thought, \u201cCome on, Gerry; the world\u2019s your oyster.\u201d I went to the SAG Awards last year. I\u2019m just having fun. I\u2019m up for developing Mrs. Wilson, but that\u2019s in the hands of writing gods, not me. But she\u2019s the housekeeper at Bridgerton House, so her presence is there. But yeah, it has changed my goals. It\u2019s made me think more things are possible.<\/p>\n<p>EZ: What can you tease about part two?<\/p>\n<p>GA: I get to wear my new coat, which was heaven and so beautifully made. I love when she gets a bit of status and attention. Also, there\u2019s a scene where Mrs. Wilson shouts.<\/p>\n<p>EZ: Are you working on anything else?<\/p>\n<p>GA: I\u2019m doing this play, Here There Are Blueberries, which has only just opened at<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stratfordeast.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Stratford East<\/a>, which is an iconic theater.
