Looking back, I think that discomfort was intentional because it made for better television and more emotional reactions,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/world\/ireland-world\/article\/holly-carpenter-influencer-max-has-forgotten-his-roots-in-the-pound-he-is-a-spoilt-diva-wfjhq89jj?gaa_at=eafs&amp;gaa_n=AWEtsqdD0b91LCy0Y0_m8UaAZVyezkVl4PHDItfFceg0KzODyh0tG1NlHSXOtxcM-90%3D&amp;gaa_ts=6998db62&amp;gaa_sig=9YBX4itMS4-wK4bJQB65_XSURNsuKsv9iaAmaKB1N-_jzfzRBiWxlvl6IxZuA7Fjs58SE5y9kUIdEo0sUS7iRQ%3D%3D\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Carpenter<\/a> was 22, newly crowned Miss Ireland and convinced she was walking into a modelling competition. Instead, she said, she was steered into vulnerability, nudged to comply and discouraged from questioning the set-up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had been a huge fan of the show when I was about 14 or 15, but looking back now that era of television was very toxic and problematic,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cI don\u2019t know how they got away with some of the things they did \u2014 the psychological pressure they put those girls under, the challenges, shaving heads \u2014 it was really extreme.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Her account lands as a new Netflix behind-the-scenes documentary revisits the America\u2019s Next Top Model phenomenon and the way reality television once treated contestants\u2019 emotional limits as production tools. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Carpenter said she believed the show prioritised drama over wellbeing, which left contestants vulnerable to manipulation, isolation and lasting emotional strain. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cAt the same time, I think the reason those shows were so successful was because of that drama. If everyone had been nice and supportive, it probably wouldn\u2019t have been as entertaining. Is that bad?<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Upon first arriving on set, Carpenter quickly realised the show was less about modelling and more about making compelling television. \u201cThe environment wasn\u2019t designed to make you feel mentally or emotionally stable. There were 14 of us sharing one room and we had no privacy at all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cThe producers were always stirring up drama by telling us things like \u2018the other girls said you didn\u2019t do well at the photoshoot today\u2019. It made you really paranoid. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cWe were filming all day, drinking coffee and barely eating. My storyline was the Irish pageant girl who loved fake tan and make-up. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/healthcare\/article\/elle-macpherson-defied-medical-advice-and-refused-chemo-for-breast-cancer-nz3wlrdn3\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elle Macpherson<\/a>, who was a judge, kept telling me to take off my make-up, even though I wasn\u2019t wearing much. It felt like they wanted me to fit a certain narrative, even when it wasn\u2019t accurate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">She said the judges differed significantly in their off-camera behaviour. \u201cDannii Minogue was lovely \u2014 she came to the house, had a pyjama party with us, and was the same person on and off camera. Tyson Beckford was quiet but kind, but Elle was very different. On camera she\u2019d call us her \u2018beautiful girls\u2019, but off camera she didn\u2019t really speak to us or engage with us at all.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Carpenter felt the editing of the show often distorted interactions between contestants to suit a certain narrative. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cI remember they showed me yawning while another girl was speaking, and it made it look like I was being rude, but that wasn\u2019t even filmed at the same time. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cAfterwards, people on Twitter were calling me arrogant. When you sign up for reality TV, you have no control over how you\u2019re edited. That can be very daunting, especially when you\u2019re young.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/life-style\/fashion\/article\/vogue-report-unhealthy-skinny-models-fashion-week-jj3qwhf9w\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">97% of catwalk models are size 4 to 8, reveals Vogue<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Despite her experience and finishing seventh out of 14 contestants, Carpenter said she had consciously \u201cplayed the game\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cI knew I wasn\u2019t going to win, but I understood that being involved in drama meant more screen time. I had already won Miss Ireland and competed at Miss World, so I had thicker skin than some of the younger girls. At that time, modelling agencies could be harsher than anything said on the show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">She said the psychological impact only hit her after filming ended. \u201cWhen I came home, I wasn\u2019t mentally okay. Being constantly watched, judged on your appearance, worrying about your weight \u2014 it becomes all-consuming. You gave them everything, and then you were left to deal with the consequences yourself. I\u2019ve had friends on more recent reality shows who received proper support afterwards, so I think that era was the tail end of a very toxic system,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cWhen you\u2019re young and naive, they can take advantage of that. You don\u2019t want to complain because you\u2019re afraid of damaging your reputation or not getting booked again. Back then, models didn\u2019t have a voice. Now, with social media, people can speak out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Despite the negatives, Carpenter said she did not regret taking part in the show. \u201cIt helped my career, but probably not my self-esteem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cBut if you asked me whether I\u2019d do it again, knowing everything I know now, I probably would. It gave me resilience and thicker skin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Carpenter was not the only contestant to speak of lasting harm. Irish actress Diona Doherty said her time on the show traumatised her to the point that she was unable to wear shorts for 15 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The 36-year-old, who played Ukrainian student Katya in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/culture\/tv-radio\/article\/lisa-mcgee-derry-girls-got-away-with-murder-because-it-was-funny-gzgk65zbm?gaa_at=eafs&amp;gaa_n=AWEtsqc-en0tulMPeK_k-K2qFeGaasL9CK09AE0msF3O2AewA9q5JTdpAxC73sKkDXM%3D&amp;gaa_ts=6998dbf5&amp;gaa_sig=4DxzfI3qKb26HWW6pmq28fkLI_lI6afs-1ma4DQnrnUzySw42SG44PU5vv8EE4Zf9o1pphvRWCiSso5tjIiaKg%3D%3D\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Derry Girls<\/a>, was a contestant on series eight of Britain and Ireland\u2019s Next Top Model in 2012 before being sent packing by judge Macpherson. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Model Diona Doherty wearing a red sleeveless shirt with a red sequined collar and a plaid bow tie.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/\/e890d81a-d275-47eb-8f1f-836fc1257bb1.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Diona Doherty appeared on Britain and Ireland\u2019s Next Top Model in 2012<\/p>\n<p>CHRIS LOBINA\/SKY LIVING<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cBasically, one of the judges said that I only look good from the waist up and that gave me a lifelong complex about my legs,\u201d she said in a video on social media last year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cIt\u2019s been 15 years since I was on that show and it\u2019s been 15 years since I\u2019ve worn shorts or worn a skirt without tights or generally just had my bare legs out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">However, Dublin model Kristine Subrovska, winner of the Ireland\u2019s Next Top Model reality TV show, said the culture had changed dramatically since its original run. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cIreland\u2019s Next Top Model is doing a more modern spin that is catered for a modern audience like working with charities and communities. It definitely wouldn\u2019t be the same as the American version.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">And while reality television has changed significantly in recent years, the 25-year-old, who also represented Ireland in the Top Model of the World competition, said the industry still struggles with toxicity and those who abuse positions of power. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Kristine Subrovska wearing a crown and &quot;Ireland&quot; sash.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/\/923d15aa-9dd7-4365-a7db-a68e116c2e6e.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Kristine Subrovska won the Ireland\u2019s Next Top Model pageant and went on to represent Ireland in the Top Model of the World event<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cThere needs to be better supports put in place because the world of modelling is definitely not all glitz and glam,\u201d said Subrovska.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cThere are sleazy photographers and fake agencies that pressure young women into doing things they\u2019re not comfortable with.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cA photographer might try and reel you in by saying \u2018we just need you to promote a make-up or dress brand\u2019. Then they\u2019d say \u2018here\u2019s another idea I have in mind, let\u2019s do this next\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cI\u2019ve also seen models getting horrible abuse from designers. The last time I was in Paris, the designers were very cruel and cut-throat. They would have no issue telling you that you were too fat, and would drop you from the show without warning, regardless of how far you had travelled.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Subrovska, who is originally from Latvia, believes anonymous trolling on social media has become a real problem for models. \u201cI\u2019ve received so many awful comments on my photos and have gotten so much hate in my DMs. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cThere was even an AI-generated image circulating that showed me as much larger, with marks on my stomach and oversized legs.<\/p>\n<p id=\"last-paragraph\" class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cIt was to make people believe that I actually wasn\u2019t skinny and photoshopped all my photos.
