{"id":296733,"date":"2026-02-22T14:30:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-22T14:30:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/296733\/"},"modified":"2026-02-22T14:30:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-22T14:30:07","slug":"centenary-of-birth-of-bishop-auckland-artist-marked-by-display","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/296733\/","title":{"rendered":"Centenary of birth of Bishop Auckland artist marked by display"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A retrospective exhibition marking the centenary of the birth of a miner-turned-artist has opened in his hometown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Tom McGuinness: Out of the Darkness features oil paintings, sketches, lithographs and personal family portraits spanning more than half a century and will be on display until December at the Mining Art Gallery in Bishop Auckland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Born in 1926, the artist was one of the Bevin Boys conscripted to work in coal mines during World War Two. He died in 2006. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Anne Sutherland, mining art and industrial heritage curator at The Auckland Project, said his art was a &#8220;powerful reminder&#8221; of miners&#8217; resilience. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A retrospective exhibition marking the centenary of the birth of a miner-turned-artist has opened in his hometown.
