{"id":296859,"date":"2026-02-22T16:45:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-22T16:45:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/296859\/"},"modified":"2026-02-22T16:45:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-22T16:45:07","slug":"jigsaw-whanganui-rhia-taonui-selected-for-major-united-nations-event-for-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/296859\/","title":{"rendered":"Jigsaw Whanganui Rhia Taonui selected for major United Nations event for Women"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">Jigsaw is a social service that offers home-based social work, family and wh\u0101nau programmes, family harm programmes and young parent support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">She was formally nominated through PACIFICA Incorporated (established 1977) and selected as part of New Zealand\u2019s Government non-government organisation (NGO) delegation to CSW70.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">Her work across community leadership, governance, and international policy submissions \u2013 particularly in areas of gender equity, racial discrimination and as an accredited Justice of the Peace \u2013 contributed to that selection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">Taonui said it was both an honour and a responsibility to be selected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cTo represent Pacific women and women in general, regional communities like Whanganui, and the social sector at a global forum is something I carry with humility,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThis appointment reflects not just individual leadership, but the collective work of many women and communities who continue to advocate for equity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">Taonui has contributed to the UN before, through PACIFICA\u2019s national leadership and international submissions work, by being involved in the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) and UN processes addressing violence against women and girls and pay equity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">Taonui was born in Auckland during the era of the Dawn Raids in the 1970s, where the Government would raid homes of \u201cover-stayer\u201d immigrants to convict and deport them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">Pacific island families were largely targeted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">Taonui said it was a time that \u201ctested the dignity and belonging of Pacific peoples in Aotearoa New Zealand\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">She was then raised in the village of Satoalepai on the island of Savai\u2019i, Samoa, before returning to New Zealand in time for intermediate school.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">Taonui later moved to Christchurch, completing a double major in M\u0101ori Development and Education and a Master\u2019s degree in M\u0101ori law and philosophy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">In 2014, Taonui relocated to her current home of Palmerston North and joined the Palmerston North City Council\u2019s community development team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">She co-founded Niuvaka Charitable Trust with Whanganui-based Lakina Sione and established a Pacific NGO provider in Palmerston North.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">Taonui said her year involved with Jigsaw has reinforced that leadership is structural and relational.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWomen\u2019s empowerment requires more than representation. It requires fair systems, sustainable funding models, cultural competence embedded in practice, and courageous governance that is prepared to make long-term decisions \u2013 not just short-term fixes,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cRelationally, transformation begins internally \u2013 our staff cannot operate at yesterday\u2019s level in today\u2019s environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">Taonui said trust is important in teams, family, funders and between governance and operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cAs I often say at work, \u2018you can only travel at the speed of trust\u2019,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cSustainable transformation does not happen through urgency alone \u2013 it happens when people feel safe, valued, and capable of stepping into the next level of leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">Taonui said women\u2019s equality is important to her because it is foundational to community wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI have worked across government, local government, iwi partnerships, and international frameworks,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIn every context, the evidence is clear \u2013 when women are safe, economically secure and in leadership, communities thrive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">She said her passion is intergenerational and is grounded in M\u0101ori and Pacific worldviews that see women as holders of knowledge, culture and collective stability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">At CSW70, Taonui will act as a liaison between New Zealand NGOs and the Government delegation, engage in Pacific, Indigenous and civil society caucuses, and speak on topics such as gender equality, violence prevention, economic empowerment and leadership representation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">She hopes to bring back to New Zealand international policy insights so that \u201cwhat happens in New York strengthens what we build in Whanganui and across Aotearoa\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThis is about translating global commitments into practical impact at home,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">She also hopes to strengthen global networks and connections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI will be taking Jigsaw Whanganui and the mahi we do to an international platform \u2013 the
