Dad’s Army<\/a>, the 2016 film reboot of the classic BBC comedy, is now available to watch for free on Channel 4’s streaming service. The movie features an all-star cast of British actors, including Toby Jones, Daniel Mays (The Thursday Murder Club<\/a>) and Blake Harrison (The Inbetweeners<\/a>), reviving the characters from the beloved sitcom.
<\/p>\n

Written by Hamish McColl (Paddington<\/a>) and based on Jimmy Perry and David Croft’s creation, Dad’s Army was helmed by actor-turned-director Oliver Parker.<\/p>\n

The plot sees the Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard platoon visited by ‘journalist’ Rose Winters (played by Wednesday<\/a>‘s Catherine Zeta-Jones), who is actually a German spy. <\/p>\n

The cast also includes Love Actually’s Bill Nighy, Tom Courtenay, Michael Gambon, Happy Valley<\/a>‘s Sarah Lancashire, and Sherlock<\/a>‘s Mark Gatiss.<\/p>\n

Upon its release, Dad’s Army received mixed reviews from critics, with The Independent<\/a> writing: “This celebration of Dad’s Army surpasses the original.”<\/p>\n

While Empire<\/a> magazine wrote: “It has a strong, game cast but this is karaoke filmmaking, trading on nostalgia rather than breaking new territory. Affable but forgettable.”

Over on IMDb<\/a>, viewers were also mixed on the film but many fans of the original series, which aired from 1968 to 1977, welcomed seeing the old characters again, albeit with new faces. <\/p>\n

One viewer wrote: “This is a marvellous and respectful comedy with some real comic moments, that will never exceed the original, but I think it does work for those of us with warm childhood memories of the original series.”<\/p>\n

Another added: “As someone who watched Dad’s Army a long time ago and still puts the DVDs on from time to time I loved it and laughed the whole way through.”<\/p>\n

While a third wrote: “The film itself is a pleasant surprise, with several laugh out loud moments and many little touches that provide a chuckle or amused smirk.”<\/p>\n

Dad’s Army is available to watch now on Channel 4’s streaming service.<\/p>\n
