{"id":297523,"date":"2026-02-23T03:34:10","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T03:34:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/297523\/"},"modified":"2026-02-23T03:34:10","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T03:34:10","slug":"reversing-bmw-driver-charged-after-auckland-northwestern-motorway-dangerous-night-stunt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/297523\/","title":{"rendered":"Reversing BMW driver charged after Auckland Northwestern Motorway \u2018dangerous\u2019 night stunt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">The car was repeatedly crossing lanes and stopped halfway up the Lincoln Rd West offramp, still facing the wrong way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">Motorways Sergeant Rowan McCarthy said the  driver told responding officers the car had mechanical issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cHe told police the car couldn\u2019t go into drive because of transmission problems, so he thought the best solution was to drive in reverse until he reached a petrol station,\u201d McCarthy said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">The man was asked why he didn\u2019t just call a tow. <\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cHe said his friend who had a tow truck was unavailable,\u201d McCarthy said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">Police said they spoke to the 48-year-old yesterday and issued him a summons for dangerous driving. <\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">He will appear in court at a later date. <\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">McCarthy thanked concerned motorists who alerted police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt\u2019s really lucky that nobody crashed or was killed as a result of this;
