{"id":297644,"date":"2026-02-23T05:23:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T05:23:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/297644\/"},"modified":"2026-02-23T05:23:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T05:23:07","slug":"taupo-police-officer-rescues-two-deaf-women-from-floodwaters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/297644\/","title":{"rendered":"Taup\u014d police officer rescues two deaf women from floodwaters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">They were on their way to Hawke\u2019s Bay from Auckland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">The passenger side of the car had water up to the windowsill and rising, but the woman was too terrified to get out of the vehicle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cShe was pretty traumatised by the whole situation, so I picked her up like a baby and managed to pass her over to Sergeant Symon Marama-Lyon who was on the other side of the road,\u201d Robertson told Ten One Magazine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">Robertson and a \u201cyoung fella, Ricky\u201d, who had offered to help, managed to get the other woman out of the car and carry her to safety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">Robertson said the water was rising quickly as they got the two women out of the vehicle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIf you were sitting in the car, it would have been mid-chest high,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThe passenger side of the road was pretty deep with a real current.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">They managed to get the car out of the water, then Robertson took the two rescued women to Taup\u014d Hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">When they were released, he put them up in his mother\u2019s house as she was away for the night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI just think about if it was my Mum or my Nana. It was really late at night and at least there they had beds and a dryer \u2013 all their suitcases were soaked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Constable Courtney Robertson came across the stranded pair as he and other staff from across Taup\u014d and Tokoroa responded to several vehicles stuck in flooding on State Highway 1 recently. Photo \/ Ten One Magazine<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">The next morning, while off duty, he checked on the women before cleaning and attempting to dry out of their sodden vehicle, which fellow police had driven back to Taup\u014d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt was a good shift. That\u2019s why we do the job right, to help people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">Kelly, the daughter of one of the two rescued women, described Robertson as a \u201chumble hero\u201d, the magazine reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">She said being in Auckland and receiving the Facetime call from her mother, frantically signing what had happened, was a scary moment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI just couldn\u2019t believe it. Mum said she was in big trouble. I was trying to keep them both calm; neither of them were calm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">The relief of seeing \u201cred and blue flashing lights\u201d as Robertson arrived was incredible, as was his extraordinary support that followed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI feel like what he did isn\u2019t the norm. These were two vulnerable ladies. He\u2019s part of the family now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">Taup\u014d Police area commander, Inspector Phil Edwards, said Robertson saw two vulnerable women in danger and did not hesitate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cHe just got in there and did what needed to be done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">The care Robertson showed the women afterwards also stood out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThis is exactly the sort of policing our community can be proud of,\u201d he told the police magazine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">NZME asked police for the date of the incident and names of the women involved and pictured.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nfOBuVOCysHhj\" style=\"display:none\">A police spokeswoman said details had been intentionally withheld in consultation with the parties involved, who did not want anything else shared in order to protect their privacy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"They were on their way to Hawke\u2019s Bay from Auckland.
