{"id":297740,"date":"2026-02-23T06:54:13","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T06:54:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/297740\/"},"modified":"2026-02-23T06:54:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T06:54:13","slug":"why-is-the-hang-seng-tech-index-underperforming-while-ai-shares-soar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/297740\/","title":{"rendered":"Why is the Hang Seng Tech Index underperforming while AI shares soar?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Hong Kong\u2019s tech equity benchmark is struggling to balance the artificial intelligence frenzy and picking the right industry leaders, leading to its underperformance this year, according to analysts.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The Hang Seng Tech Index, which comprises 30 technology-related companies including Tencent Holdings, Alibaba Group Holding and Meituan, has fallen 5.5 per cent this year up to Friday, giving up some of last year\u2019s 23.5 per cent gains.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">In contrast, the broad-based Hang Seng Index has risen 0.3 per cent year to date. The city\u2019s tech gauge has also been outpaced by the US\u2019 tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 Index, which has fallen 0.8 per cent in the same period.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Meanwhile, mainland Chinese AI-related companies have benefited from the ongoing investment frenzy. Knowledge Atlas Technology, better known as Zhipu AI, has soared 523 per cent from its offer price to HK$725 on Friday, followed by MiniMax\u2019s 488 per cent gain to HK$970 and Beijing Haizhi Technology Group\u2019s 469 per cent increase to HK$154.10.
