{"id":297827,"date":"2026-02-23T08:15:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T08:15:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/297827\/"},"modified":"2026-02-23T08:15:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T08:15:07","slug":"chinese-shoppers-are-asias-biggest-airport-spenders-study-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/297827\/","title":{"rendered":"Chinese shoppers are Asia\u2019s biggest airport spenders, study finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Chinese travellers are outspending their Asian peers at the region\u2019s airports in search of gifts, food and luxury purchases, a trade association has found.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Passengers from China have led the recovery in Asia\u2019s airport retail since the Covid-19 pandemic, spending twice the regional average on luxury goods, according to a study by the Airports Council International (ACI) Asia-Pacific and Middle East released earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">China\u2019s travellers have logged the \u201chighest spend per passenger of any nationality\u201d during the post-pandemic period, the association\u2019s director general, Stefano Baronci, said earlier this month. Recovery in spending has outpaced that of passenger volumes, he added.<\/p>\n<p>The trend reflects the strength of China\u2019s outbound travel market, which <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3339348\/chinas-outbound-travel-set-soar-10-million-trips-2026-halve-japan?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">has bounced back strongly<\/a> since the pandemic even as demand in other sectors of the Chinese economy <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/economic-indicators\/article\/3340360\/chinas-gdp-rises-5-2025-us-trade-war-fails-knock-economy-course?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">has remained sluggish<\/a>. The market was worth an estimated US$140 billion in 2024 and is forecast to reach US$386 billion by 2033, according to a report by HSBC.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Many Chinese travellers choose to buy confectionary goods at airports to give as gifts back home, according to Baronci.
