{"id":29862,"date":"2025-09-18T16:00:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-18T16:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/29862\/"},"modified":"2025-09-18T16:00:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-18T16:00:10","slug":"health-minister-simeon-brown-blames-doctors-union-for-failed-pay-talks-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/29862\/","title":{"rendered":"Health Minister Simeon Brown blames doctors\u2019 union for failed pay talks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"kqzEwDUUT\" style=\"display:none\">Either side can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/topic\/employment-relations-authority\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/topic\/employment-relations-authority\/\">apply to the ERA<\/a> to fix the terms and conditions of a collective agreement if it can prove there has been a \u201cserious and sustained\u201d breach of good faith and all reasonable alternatives have been used up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"kqzEwDUUT\" style=\"display:none\">It means the ERA has the final say on what is included in the collective agreement, which becomes a binding and enforceable agreement just as if it had been agreed, ratified and signed by the parties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"kqzEwDUUT\" style=\"display:none\">Sullivan said officials were \u201cfrustrated and disappointed\u201d by the union\u2019s response to the new package put forward this week, which totalled $160 million over a 16-month term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"kqzEwDUUT\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThe package put forward this week would have cost taxpayers an additional $31m over four years when compared to the offer made to senior doctors at the end of July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"kqzEwDUUT\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThese increases are in addition to the $5900 annual step increase <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/economy\/employment\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/economy\/employment\/\">senior doctors<\/a> receive until they reach the top of the 15-step pay scale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"kqzEwDUUT\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe are disappointed ASMS has chosen not to progress bargaining on the basis of this improved package, which we consider to be a fair and reasonable way forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"kqzEwDUUT\" style=\"display:none\">Based on the impacts of the 24-hour strike in May, it was estimated the longer action on September 23 and 24 would disrupt care for more than 13,000 patients, Sullivan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"kqzEwDUUT\" style=\"display:none\">Contingency plans were in place to ensure care for those who needed it urgently, but disruptions to hospital services would continue for a week.<\/p>\n<p>Health minister accuses union of walking away from patients<\/p>\n<p class=\"kqzEwDUUT\" style=\"display:none\">Health Minister Simeon Brown <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/health-nz-taking-striking-medical-union-to-employment-relations-authority-as-negotiations-stall\/LQGNUIE4ZZHL7KEZ3TKS6I2FHY\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/health-nz-taking-striking-medical-union-to-employment-relations-authority-as-negotiations-stall\/LQGNUIE4ZZHL7KEZ3TKS6I2FHY\/\">blamed the union for the stalemate<\/a>, after it refused his recent request for it to enter binding arbitration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"kqzEwDUUT\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThe ASMS union is putting politics ahead of patients, while Health New Zealand continues to engage in good faith.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"kqzEwDUUT\" style=\"display:none\">Senior doctors were \u201camong the most well-remunerated public servants, with many also working in private practice\u201d, Brown said, with an average pay of $343,500, including overtime and allowances and \u201cgenerous conditions\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"kqzEwDUUT\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cLet\u2019s be clear: this strike is a choice.
