{"id":298971,"date":"2026-02-24T01:42:11","date_gmt":"2026-02-24T01:42:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/298971\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T01:42:11","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T01:42:11","slug":"runner-sam-ruthe-claims-every-under-20-record-possible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/298971\/","title":{"rendered":"Runner Sam Ruthe claims every under-20 record possible"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Runner Sam Ruthe has officially rewritten the record book, as he now holds every under-20 accolade possible.<\/p>\n<p>Having already claimed record times from 800-5000m, there was one distance evading his near-perfect resume, the 3000m.<\/p>\n<p>However, Ruthe completed the feat on Monday afternoon, as he comfortably eclipsed the time of 7:54.30 set by Liam Black in 2021, shaving more than 10 seconds off the record at the Saucony Battle in Boston.<\/p>\n<p>Ruthe crossed the finish in 7:43.16, coming second behind American Ernest Cheruiyot.<\/p>\n<p>Ruthe shot out of the blocks quickly and was just .03 seconds behind Cheruiyot at the first 200m.<\/p>\n<p>He dropped back to third after 800m, before he and Cheruiyot were separated by 0.24 seconds with 400m to go.<\/p>\n<p>Ruthe would produce his slowest 200m on the final stretch, though it was still more than fast enough to take the record.<\/p>\n<p>Boston University is a happy running ground for Ruthe, the site of his historic 3:48 mile.<\/p>\n<p>Ruthe became the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1news.co.nz\/2026\/01\/25\/ruthe-breaks-world-record-as-fastest-16-year-old-to-run-mile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">youngest athlete to ever run a mile<\/a> quicker than 3m 50s and took the New Zealand men&#8217;s record from Sir John Walker, which he held for 44 years.<\/p>\n<p>Sam Ruthe&#8217;s complete crown of under-20 records:<\/p>\n<p>800m &#8211; 1:45.86<\/p>\n<p>1000m &#8211; 2:17.82<\/p>\n<p>1500m &#8211; 3:33.25<\/p>\n<p>Mile &#8211; 3:48.88 (NZ Mile Record)<\/p>\n<p>3000m &#8211; 7:43.16<\/p>\n<p>5000m &#8211; 13:40.48<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/sport\/587681\/runner-sam-ruthe-rewrites-the-record-books\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">rnz.co.nz<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Runner Sam Ruthe has officially rewritten the record book, as he now holds every under-20 accolade possible.
