Another season of\u00a0The Voice<\/a> is officially underway<\/a>. The Season 29 Blind Auditions began during the Monday, February 23, episode. John Legend<\/a>, Kelly Clarkson<\/a>, and Adam Levine<\/a> (all former champions) all returned in hopes of adding another win to their r\u00e9sum\u00e9s as coaches.<\/p>\n

With the addition of the Triple Turn competition<\/a>, which gives the coach who gets the most three-chair turns an advantage in the Battle Rounds, the coaches were more intense than ever in their pitches to get the best singers on their teams.<\/p>\n

Lucas West<\/p>\n

Lucas West gave the first performance of the night, singing \u201cBenny and the Jets\u201d by Elton John<\/a>. Levine turned around first, followed by Legend.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s so crazy because when I heard you sing, and then I turned around, like, 20 minutes before John, I was blown away by how different you are,\u201d Levine noted. \u201cSeeing you be a musician there, playing keys, doing it soulful, doing it simply, I don\u2019t see that on the show.\u201d<\/p>\n

Legend and Levine went back and forth trying to one-up each other. \u201cSeeing how soulful you are, it made me want you on Team Legend even more,\u201d Legend concluded. \u201cI\u2019d love to coach you.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Lucas\u2019 mom pushed for Legend, Levine wanted to make sure to get another word in. \u201cWhen we first got signed, it was a struggle in the beginning because no one knew where to put us. That ended up being the best thing that could ever happen. Not fitting in at the beginning really puts you at an advantage to be something different than everybody else. I am very, very passionate about being part of that. I just think you\u2019re super special, man.\u201d<\/p>\n

But even after his passionate plea, Levine knew what was coming: Lucas picked Legend as his coach.<\/p>\n

Alexia Jayy<\/p>\n

For her Blind Audition, Alexia Jayy sang \u201c(You Make Me Feel) Like a Natural Woman.\u201d Clarkson turned right away, followed by Legend and Levine, making this the first Triple Turn of the season.<\/p>\n

Legend gushed, \u201cYou have it all. Not only do you have the raw ability, but you know how to deploy it in the right way. You are my type of singer. I love your voice. I love your style.\u201d<\/p>\n

Levine noted that Clarkson or Legend might make a better choice for Alexia, but pointed out, \u201cThat song you sang, Aretha Franklin<\/a>, but written by Carole King<\/a>. Two very different people came together to create one of the best moments in music history because they were different. As the golden goddess unicorn with the flowers in her hair that you are, maybe the way for you to go all the way here is to do it with somebody that not everybody would expect.\u201d<\/p>\n

Clarkson praised Alexia for singing such a powerful song. \u201cIt\u2019s such a big, bold statement,\u201d she raved. \u201cIn order to win, you have to come out here and say, \u2018Yeah, I know that\u2019s the Queen of Soul, but I have something to offer, and I want to do something bold.’\u201d<\/p>\n

When Alexia brought her son onstage, and he revealed that Maroon 5 is his favorite artist, Levine lit up. \u201cYou have the voice that motivates me even more to say this is the best voice in the competition,\u201d he added. In the end, Alexia picked Levine for his coach, giving him the first Triple Turn point.<\/p>\n

Julia Golden<\/p>\n

Julia Golden\u2019s performance of Deana Carter\u2019s \u201cStrawberry Wine\u201d earned chair turns from Legend, then Clarkson at the very end. Legend made sure to point out that he turned first, but Clarkson insisted it\u2019s just because she lost herself singing along with Julia.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have such a beautiful texture to your voice,\u201d Legend said. \u201cIt feels like you\u2019ve got so much heart when you sing. I think you could go far on this show.\u201d Clarkson praised Julia for being \u201cauthentic\u201d and \u201cbelievable\u201d in her performance.<\/p>\n

Legend tried to one-up Clarkson by playing a video of Reba McEntire<\/a> promising that he would be a good coach to any country artist, so Clarkson called McEntire up to get her endorsement, as well. It was quite a battle, but Julia ended up choosing Clarkson as her coach.<\/p>\n

Abigayle Oakley<\/p>\n

Legend, Clarkson, and Levine all pressed their buttons immediately when Abigayle Oakley started singing \u201cCall Your Girlfriend\u201d by Robyn<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Levine told Abigayle that he\u2019s \u201csuch a fan\u201d of her, adding, \u201cThe second you started singing, all three of us were just like, \u2018Let\u2019s go.\u2019 You have a special thing. We all picked up on that instantaneously and turned around because when you have something special, it just shines through, no matter what.\u201d<\/p>\n

Clarkson raved over Abigayle\u2019s head voice and compared her to Joni Mitchell<\/a>. \u201cYou\u2019ve got a very special thing,\u201d she noted. \u201cPlease pick songs people wouldn\u2019t expect. I just think it would be exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Legend noted that\u00a0The Voice can sometimes be known for big singers and belters, but assured Abigayle that there\u2019s also a lane for a \u201cmore folky, more singer\/songwriter\u201d artist. \u201cWe know an artist like you can do really well on this show with great coaching, and I feel like I can really help you figure that path out,\u201d he admitted.<\/p>\n

In the end, Clarkson earned her first Triple Turn point when Abigayle chose her as a coach.<\/p>\n

Landon Price<\/p>\n

Landon Price sang John Legend and Common\u2019s \u201cGlory,\u201d but did not receive any chair turns. The coaches noted afterwards that it may have been too mature of a song for him to perform.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you for performing my song,\u201d Legend told the teenager. \u201cI thought you were very creative with how you sang it. There were a lot of choices that weren\u2019t in the original record that I thought were really cool and bold of you.\u201d He also urged Landon to come back and promised him he\u2019d have a \u201cgreat future\u201d on the show.<\/p>\n

Levine said that Landon fooling the judges into thinking he was \u201cat least 10 years older\u201d than he is was \u201ca testament to how good you are,\u201d and Clarkson agreed, adding, \u201cSometimes it\u2019s important for us to just have a little more life happen to really understand that message [of a song] and let it bleed through.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jonah Mayor<\/p>\n

Jonah Mayor took a risk by performing his Blind Audition song, \u201cIl Mondo,\u201d completely in Italian. Clarkson was sucked in immediately and pushed her button, with Levine eventually following.<\/p>\n

Afterwards, Clarkson got out of her seat to hug Jonah and told him that he was her \u201cfavorite performance\u201d of the season so far. \u201cWelcome to Team Kelly,\u201d Levine joked. \u201cI can\u2019t compete with any of what just happened.\u201d However, he gave Jonah a hug, too, to even things out.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that what you do is so singular and there\u2019s really not going to be anyone like you,\u201d Levine admitted. \u201cYou are the absolute complete package as far as performer and singer.\u201d Legend called Jonah \u201ccharismatic\u201d and \u201csuper gifted,\u201d while Clarkson raved over his \u201cbeautiful tone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Levine and Clarkson argued back and forth, but Clarkson came out on top in the end.<\/p>\n

Bay Simpson<\/p>\n

Bay Simpson, a distant relative of Elvis Presley<\/a>, sang \u201cThe Waiting\u201d by Tom Petty<\/a> & the Heartbreakers. Levine pushed his button and turned around at the last second.<\/p>\n

\u201cRock and roll is in your bones,\u201d he told Bay. \u201cI\u2019ve never really heard anyone do a Petty song \u2026 well, the big ones, but that one said something about you that I really took to. I\u2019m happy it happened the way it did because I don\u2019t have to fight against them, but the tone and the way you delivered that vocal gave me an understanding that you know rock and roll music.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since Levine was the only coach to turn around, Bay automatically ended up on his team.<\/p>\n

Liv Ciara<\/p>\n

After not getting any chairs to turn when she auditioned in Season 28, 16-year-old Liv Ciara returned with a rendition of Ariana Grande<\/a>\u2018s \u201cWe Can\u2019t Be Friends,\u201d which prompted Levine and Clarkson to turn their chairs.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour voice is so mature and developed in that way that is special enough to make us turn around, but what\u2019s awesome is that you\u2019re young,\u201d Levine noted. \u201cYou are already so way ahead with your voice and the way you connected to that vocal the whole entire time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Clarkson said she \u201cloved\u201d what Liv did. \u201cThat\u2019s one of my favorite Ariana songs,\u201d she added. \u201cI love that you did a completely different take on it. You flipped it and made it more sad.\u201d<\/p>\n

Levine recognized that it was a \u201cwaste of time\u201d for him to fight Clarkson on this one, but he tried his best. In the end, though, Liv picked Clarkson to be her coach.<\/p>\n

Aaron LaVigne<\/p>\n

Aaron LaVigne, a Broadway star, performed \u201cFeels Like the First Time,\u201d and Clarkson and Legend both turned their chairs toward the end.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was turned around and looking at you for so long before John did,\u201d Clarkson made sure to note. \u201cI hit my button because I have no one like you on my team. It seems like you\u2019re really bold, and you love singing, you can tell. It\u2019s a passion for you. That\u2019s perfect for Team Kelly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Legend admitted that he was worried Aaron\u2019s voice \u201cwasn\u2019t going to cut through,\u201d but said he was impressed by the end, which is why he turned around. Aaron noted that he starred in\u00a0Jesus Christ Superstar<\/a> on Broadway, and pointed out that Legend was in NBC\u2019s live version of the show.<\/p>\n

While it seemed like a shoo-in that Legend would be Aaron\u2019s pick, he surprised everyone by going with Clarkson, noting that he related to her because of how she reacted to Celine Dion<\/a>\u2018s comeback performance at the 2024 Olympics.<\/p>\n

AJ Robinson<\/p>\n

AJ Robinson, a 14-year-old country singer, got Legend to push his button when he performed Lainey Wilson<\/a>\u2018s \u201cWatermelon Moonshine.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat made me push my button was I loved your tone,\u201d he admitted. \u201cI love the way your voice kind of floats. It has a richness that\u2019s way richer than it should sound when you\u2019re only 14 years old. I\u2019m ready to help you do really well on this show.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jeremy Keith<\/p>\n

The final performance of the night was from Jeremy Keith, a former backup singer who joined the \u201990s group After 7 when one of its original members left. All three coaches turned for his performance of \u201cYou Are My Lady.\u201d<\/p>\n

Levine admitted that Legend was probably the coach that made the most sense for Jeremy, and Legend accused him of trying to use \u201creverse psychology\u201d on the contestant. \u201cYou are so incredibly good,\u201d Levine gushed. \u201cI understand John\u2019s extensive understanding of R&B. I can\u2019t fight the man when it comes to what we\u2019re talking about. I can, however, speak to experience as a coach on\u00a0The Voice, which I have a lot of.\u201d<\/p>\n

Clarkson made sure to interject and reiterate that she has the most wins of the coaches. \u201cBeing a background vocalist, those singers in my life are the greatest singers I will ever come in contact with,\u201d she shared. \u201cWhat that lets me know is that you can sing any song.\u201d She told Jeremy that she believes he can win the show.<\/p>\n

Legend then pulled out all the stops by taking the stage and singing his song \u201cOrdinary People\u201d with Jeremy. The coaches went back and forth a bit more, and Jeremy shocked them all when he selected Levine.<\/p>\n

\u201cChoosing Adam wasn\u2019t the obvious choice, especially after that duet,\u201d he pointed out. \u201cBut I love his music, and I feel like he will bring something different out of me as an artist.\u201d<\/p>\n
