The specimens measured nearly six millimetres in length. Within their\u00a0taxonomic group, that counts as enormous.<\/p>\n<p>The species, named\u00a0Megabathynella totemensis, carries up to\u00a011 claws. Most of its relatives carry seven. The combination of size, claw count and other physical features was so distinct that researchers determined the organism could not be placed in any existing\u00a0genus.<\/p>\n<p>The discovery, published in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/europeanjournaloftaxonomy.eu\/index.php\/ejt\/article\/view\/2545\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">European Journal of Taxonomy<\/a>, represents the first recorded instance of a\u00a0Bathynellacea\u00a0species in an Australian cave. It also raises questions about what happens to life forms that evolve in\u00a0isolation underground, and why some of them grow larger than their surface relatives.<\/p>\n<p>What Counts as Giant Underground<\/p>\n<p>The study defines size thresholds explicitly. \u201cHere, we consider species larger than 4 mm to be \u2018giant\u2018 and those of 2.5-4 mm to be \u2018large\u2019,\u201d the authors stated. Credit: European Journal of Taxonomy<\/p>\n<p>The genus name derives from the Greek\u00a0megas, meaning big. The species name refers to\u00a0Totem Pole Cave, where the organisms were collected. The location sits within the\u00a0Pungalina karst area\u00a0along the Gulf of Carpentaria, a limestone landscape that dissolves over time to form caves, sinkholes and underground waterways.<\/p>\n<p>The specimens\u2019 physical description includes segmented bodies, protruding teeth, enlarged spines along the inner wall of the\u00a0thorax, and translucence consistent with adaptation to\u00a0aphotic environments. Pigmentation is typically lost over generations in cave-dwelling organisms.<\/p>\n<p>Fifty-Seven Percent More Claws than Most Relatives<\/p>\n<p>The claw count drew particular attention from the research team. \u201cThe new genus has numerous claws, \u2026 up to 11, and only some species of Billibathynella come close, with 10 claws, but the most common state is seven claws,\u201d according to the study.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"932\" height=\"359\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1771970407_850_image-24.png\" alt=\"Image\" class=\"wp-image-108872\"\/>The image shows a preserved female specimen of Megabathynella totemensis. This placed the organism outside existing taxonomic boundaries and warranted the establishment of a new genus, not merely a new species within an existing one.<\/p>\n<p>The study documented additional distinctive features. The specimens have more than 12 articles on the\u00a0antennules, each bearing a short, curved barbed seta from the fifth article onward. The\u00a0exopod\u00a0of the\u00a0thoracopods\u00a0contains up to 17 articles, each with a strong spine at the base of the external seta. The male\u00a0thoracopod VIII, a reproductive appendage, differs from all previously described forms within the family\u00a0Parabathynellidae.<\/p>\n<p>Giant Crustaceans Are Turning up Everywhere<\/p>\n<p>The discovery fits a broader geographical pattern. The authors noted that \u201cas new species continue to be discovered and described in Australia and around the world, it is interesting to observe that large and giant species (of Bathynellacea) occur on every continent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Giant Bathynellacea have now been documented on every continent, according to the study. Credit: European Journal of Taxonomy<\/p>\n<p>The researchers expect additional finds. \u201cIt is likely that numerous new species will be discovered in these and other countries with further survey of prospective habitats, as is the case in Australia,\u201d they stated.<\/p>\n<p>Large portions of Australia\u2019s cave systems and\u00a0groundwater aquifers\u00a0remain unsurveyed for microscopic crustaceans. Karst environments are expected to yield additional undescribed species as sampling efforts expand.<\/p>\n<p>What Scientists Still Do Not Understand<\/p>\n<p>The factors driving larger body size and increased morphological complexity in\u00a0subterranean crustaceans\u00a0remain unconfirmed. The authors wrote that \u201cfuture studies could explore the factors that lead to this unusually large size and proliferation of articles and\u00a0setae\u00a0observed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The specimens were collected from shallow pools in Totem Pole Cave. More than 80 individuals were observed.
