Galway man Joe Loughnane has told an oireachtais committee that the ‘revolving door’ of A&E visits for those in a mental health crisis is ‘forcing people to end their own lives’.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the committee on Public Petitions and the Ombudsmen last evening, Joe called for the establishment of dedicated Mental Health A&E’s.<\/p>\n

Joe’s younger brother, Adam, died by suicide following a visit to the UHG emergency department in February of last year.<\/p>\n

The Adam’s protocols petition calling for the dedicated A&Es now has over 21,000 signatures.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the committee hearing, he says that emergency staff need to be given proper mental health training.<\/p>\n
