\u201cunwarranted industrial policy\u201d amid mounting external imbalances.The IMF staff\u2019s recommendations, issued ahead of Beijing\u2019s annual parliamentary meetings, joined increasingly loud calls for economic rebalancing, particularly after <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3337312\/chinas-record-trade-surplus-could-prompt-protectionist-response-2026-report?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">China\u2019s record trade surplus<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cChina needs to move decisively towards consumption-led growth,\u201d Sonali Jain-Chandra, IMF mission chief for China, said in an interview with the South China Morning Post.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">She added that the IMF welcomed Beijing\u2019s focus on consumption in its 15th five-year plan proposals and the readout of December\u2019s central economic work conference, which set the economic agenda in the year ahead.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Jain-Chandra cited a comprehensive policy package IMF staff set out in a recently published annual review of China\u2019s economy \u2013 known as the Article IV consultation \u2013 urging more forceful fiscal stimulus to lift consumption and address strains in the property sector, alongside stronger social protection, further monetary easing and greater exchange-rate flexibility.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cTransitioning to a consumption-led growth model should be the overarching priority,\u201d the IMF executive board said in a statement accompanying the report. \u201cAn expansionary stance should be maintained until deflationary pressures subside
