(Photo by YAMIL LAGE \/ AFP)\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nThe Cuban Coast Guard tows a boat attempting to leave the country in Havana on December 12, 2022.<br \/>\nPhoto: AFP \/ Yamil Lage\n<\/p>\n<p>The firefight comes amid heightened tensions between the United States and the communist island, which lies just 160km across the Florida Straits.<\/p>\n<p>It came as Washington softened <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/world\/584462\/life-in-cuba-is-about-to-get-harder-as-trump-threatens-oil-supply\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a virtual oil siege<\/a> of the island imposed by President Donald Trump in January after the US ouster of top Cuba ally, Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela.<\/p>\n<p>Before Maduro&#8217;s capture by US forces on 3 January, Cuba had relied on Venezuela for about half its fuel needs.<\/p>\n<p>Faced with an outcry from Caribbean leaders, worried that starving Cuba of oil would cause the economy to quickly collapse, Washington said it would allow shipments of Venezuelan oil for &#8220;commercial and humanitarian use&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, CNN is reporting the nationalities of those aboard the speedboat were unknown.<\/p>\n<p>US Republican Congressman Carlos A Gimenez said the incident raised concerns about the use of lethal force against people aboard a US-registered vessel and called for an investigation into the incident.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;United States authorities must determine whether any of the victims were US citizens or legal residents and establish exactly what occurred,&#8221; he said in a statement posted to X. &#8220;The regime in Cuba must be relegated to the dustbin of history for its countless crimes against humanity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>CNN has reached out to the US State Department for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Cuba&#8217;s interior ministry said authorities were investigating the incident.<\/p>\n<p>-AFP \/ CNN<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The boat was detected one nautical mile from Falcones Cay in Villa Clara province in Cuba.
