These structures form frog \u201csaunas\u201d that offer endangered frogs a warm refuge from a catastrophic disease.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0z93al000h3b6rr0chpn6e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The saunas are part of an experiment led by Anthony Waddle, a researcher at Macquarie University in Sydney, who created this novel, low-tech intervention to help frogs fight off a deadly fungus.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0z93al000i3b6rdbo8mfpt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Waddle, an American-born biologist, wasn\u2019t drawn to Australia for its stunning coastlines or unique marsupials \u2014 instead he relocated for a tiny, slimy, sun-loving creature found in freshwater habitats throughout the southeast \u2014 the green and golden bell frog.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0z93al000j3b6rak2phw0x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            With bulging eyes, bulbous digits and vibrantly colored skin to match their name, these native frogs are one of the country\u2019s most striking amphibians, but also, one of its most threatened species.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/cover-frog-copy.jpg\" alt=\"The green and golden bell frog, pictured, was once one of the most common frogs in New South Wales, Australia. It has seen a dramatic decline, in part from the deadly chytrid fungus.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"3024\" width=\"4032\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0z93al000k3b6rvc4hpjrl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Over the past three decades, green and golden bell frog populations in New South Wales \u2014once their stronghold \u2014 have declined to just 10% of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au\/plants-and-animals\/green-and-golden-bell-frog#:~:text=Once%20common%20on%20the%20NSW%20coast%20and%20tablelands%2C%20populations%20have%20plummeted%20around%2090%20percent.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">historical levels<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0z93al000l3b6r2ne9bx8a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Although habitat loss and climate change have contributed to their collapse, a major driver has been chytrid \u2014 an ancient fungus that has morphed into a modern-day killer.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0z93al000m3b6ra4pu7jtw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The form responsible for the green and golden bell frog decline, and for mass amphibian die-offs over the last half-century, is known scientifically as Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis. This waterborne pathogen triggers a highly contagious and often fatal disease called chytridiomycosis, affecting frogs, toads and salamanders.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0z93al000n3b6rmpdk7h32@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe chytrid fungus is attracted to their skin, it attaches to it and it dissolves the skin\u2019s barriers,\u201d Waddle said. Put simply, \u201cchytrid is eating their skin.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0z93al000o3b6rv54lmcbk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For amphibians, skin is more than a protective layer \u2014 it is vital for breathing, absorbing water and other regulatory processes. When these functions are disrupted, it places stress on the heart and can lead to cardiac arrest.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0z93al000p3b6rt8fdl87g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis is the worst disease ever to impact biodiversity, and most people don\u2019t even know it exists,\u201d Waddle told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0z9gk8000u3b6ras07rs6w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Waddle has made it his life\u2019s work to help save species threatened by the fungus. In 2016, the conservation biologist began his work in the lab \u2014 developing a vaccine to combat the disease in leopard frogs in the Western US.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0zsg4f000z3b6r3c2dfbb2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He created a weakened form of chytrid that the frogs could easily fend off and <a href=\"https:\/\/besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/1365-2664.13974\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">discovered<\/a> it could spread from frog to frog without causing illness \u2014 instead functioning as a transmissible vaccine boosting their resistance and improving survival when later exposed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0zsg4f00103b6roff7mnaq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He then turned his attention to how temperature shapes the disease\u2019s dynamics. Across continents, chytrid outbreaks follow a seasonal pattern \u2014 devastating frog populations in cold winters but subsiding in warmer months, indicating the fungus thrives in cooler weather.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm10ptdd002o3b6r5bjtzj3j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This left Waddle wondering: \u201cIf the frogs had access to high temperatures, could they get better?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/gettyimages-2168360342.jpg\" alt=\"Macquarie University biologist Anthony Waddle, seen here, building \" saunas=\"\" where=\"\" frogs=\"\" can=\"\" warm=\"\" up=\"\" and=\"\" fight=\"\" off=\"\" the=\"\" deadly=\"\" chytrid=\"\" infection.=\"\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"5504\" width=\"8256\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0zsg4f00123b6rf7jzs91x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 2020, Waddle started to construct small frog saunas using stacked masonry bricks covered with simple greenhouse structures that heat up in the sun. The shelters quickly became popular with the green and golden bell frogs, which are naturally drawn to warmth.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0zsg4f00133b6rjne869d4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He found that when frogs\u2019 body temperatures reached about 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit), a threshold chytrid cannot tolerate, many were able to get rid of their infections.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0zsg4f00143b6rny2w14vv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As a control measure, Waddle also placed frogs in shaded, cooler structures. Frogs with access to the hot shelters warmed up and rapidly cleared the fungus, while those in the cooler enclosures did not, his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-024-07582-y.epdf?sharing_token=pg7k0BfzjanyeqrV6m3Ug9RgN0jAjWel9jnR3ZoTv0PO0i8oMnOqyvPmtuUlzezoM8XRibEDj_1JsAaJWIczU7kLGXO0YHOvi7zSBOxZSJZIGjJL2W2glZfFOqNkJC3Nb-U3JuGCa_5nezUNglIej_rkgQxoTNCSieiWrw8v8VCne9-P3eiJS7dNatvym7LgoLuvtB1WRaWrRsuBD2HkFtN7wCM7InTe0vj7ceyldhlJg2O1RTe574tO8PXv3WMWYeBB9n7wqWY-MG2iIIxTSg%3D%3D&amp;tracking_referrer=www.sciencenews.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a>, published in the journal Nature, concluded.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0zsg4f00153b6rc6s3q9w7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Waddle said the sauna method also helps build immunity. \u201cWe found that frogs that had an infection cured with heat were 23 times more likely to survive a reinfection,\u201d he told CNN, adding \u201cthey do get reinfected, but at really low rates.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/photo-6-11-2023-9-02-18-am.jpg\" alt=\"The green and golden bell frog, pictured, is a heat-loving, urban-adapted amphibian, said Waddle. When given options, they were four times more likely to use the artificial saunas than their natural habitat, he added.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2268\" width=\"3024\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0zsg4f00163b6r2703af9n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To have a meaningful impact, these saunas would need to be deployed widely across a species\u2019 range. A relatively inexpensive solution, Waddle has published a simple <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1Y2SatNgmsIMGQ3MvBxTeaCJp5ybo1N44\/view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">guide<\/a> to help people build their own.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0zsg4f00173b6r5mqih4vv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But these saunas won\u2019t work in all climates or on all species, Waddle noted. For instance, raising the body temperature of Australia\u2019s endangered corroboree frog \u2014 an alpine-inhabiting species \u2014 would kill it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0zsw7s001b3b6rof88gare@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Frogs have endured four mass extinctions, evolving repeatedly to survive a changing planet. But now, facing a fast-moving fungal pandemic that has become the most devastating infectious disease in vertebrate history \u2014 according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scidev.net\/global\/news\/deadly-fungal-disease-caused-greatest-biodiversity-loss-ever-recorded\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2019 retrospective study<\/a> \u2014 researchers like Waddle say they need our help.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0ztp3b001d3b6rlz82cseg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The first major amphibian die-offs that scientists could link to chytrid likely began in the 1970s, but it took more than two decades for research to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1073\/pnas.95.15.9031\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">identify<\/a> the fungus as the culprit.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0ztp3b001e3b6rcgf3gjlo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Untangling chytrid\u2019s role from other environmental pressures is difficult, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.aav0379\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">research<\/a> estimates that globally, the fungus has driven around 90 species to extinction and pushed more than 500 others into decline.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0ztp3b001f3b6rd2y3ujij@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Once it enters, chytrid becomes part of the ecosystem and cannot be eradicated. It has been found on every amphibian-inhabiting continent, said Bree Rosenblum, an evolutionary biologist and professor at University of California, Berkeley.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0ztp3b001g3b6rlos0dnlz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This disease is striking a group already in crisis: \u201cAmphibians are a very endangered group of creatures on our planet; more than a third of amphibians are considered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-023-06578-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">threatened with extinction<\/a>,\u201d Rosenblum told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0ztp3b001h3b6ro6n81au8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Because they occupy a critical middle rung of the food chain, she said, their disappearance could ripple outwards, setting off chain reactions that affect countless other species.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0ztp3b001i3b6rfuou5coc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            They also serve as natural pest control, like feeding on mosquitoes that carry diseases such as malaria and West Nile virus.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0ztp3b001j3b6rxbgs9oel@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOnce you start taking species out of ecosystems, it has cascading, catastrophic effects,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0ztp3b001k3b6r1oqw07vn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            More than two decades ago, Rosenblum started investigating where chytrid came from and how it spread, using genetic tools to reconstruct the fungus\u2019s evolutionary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.1300130110\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">family tree<\/a>. Her work revealed that chytrid was not a single invader but a collection of lineages that evolved in different parts of the world and later spread globally \u2014 likely through wildlife trade and human movement.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/gettyimages-2227710851.jpg\" alt=\"Genetic mapping has revealed chytrid's uneven death toll: populations coexisting with chytrid were better able to survive than newly affected ones. Adding to the complexity, some amphibians are naturally more resistant \u2014 while some chytrid strains are more lethal.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2054\" width=\"3081\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0ztp3b001m3b6rlkvg068t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe can reconstruct it the best we can with our genetic data, but something changed in the last decades to hundreds of years that made it much more deadly,\u201d she said. \u201cThe big question is, is it just that something changed in the chytrid, or did something also change in frogs to made them less able to fight it off because of other environmental stressors.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0ztp3b001n3b6r20p0cbqw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She believes that slowing the disease\u2019s spread through the wildlife trade, and reducing pressures like habitat destruction and pollution, are critical steps in curbing the amphibian extinction crisis.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0ztp3c001o3b6rk6idbdh4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But \u201cprobably the most important thing is buying amphibians time,\u201d she said. \u201cThe long-term solution is evolution, so they can adapt and build natural immunity.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0ztp3c001q3b6rq43u5juh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In Northern California\u2019s Cascade Mountains, froglets lie with their legs outstretched in shallow baths \u2014 a group of unlikely patients in a fight for survival.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0ztp3c001r3b6r2tc6hdgr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            These are Cascades frogs. Endemic to the Pacific Northwest, they live in high mountain lakes and meadows from Northern California up to British Columbia, Canada.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0ztp3c001s3b6rs0wcalrc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            They have been disappearing from this landscape, particularly from the southern end of their range, said Dr. Jonah Piovia-Scott, an associate professor of biological sciences at Washington State University.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0ztp3c001t3b6rpofricda@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI had initially started off studying the impacts of introduced trout on these frogs, and then we realized that something else was also happening,\u201d Piovia-Scott told CNN \u2014 \u201cand it turned out that that was chytrid.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0ztp3c001u3b6r85wu43gi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Having studied chytrid for two and a half decades, he knew that antifungal treatments could help eliminate the infection \u2014 at least in controlled, laboratory settings.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0ztp3c001v3b6rxpthgc60@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe were really interested in seeing whether we can actually have an impact on survival in an at-risk, wild population,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0ztp3c001w3b6r6gtl31xc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 2012, Piovia-Scott\u2019s team tested baths with diluted itraconazole, a common antifungal agent, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.int-res.com\/abstracts\/dao\/v112\/dao02813\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">found<\/a> they reduced chytrid infections and improved survival in wild populations of metamorphosed tadpoles (froglets) \u2014 the life stage most vulnerable to disease-related mortality.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/dsc9888.jpg\" alt=\"Pictured, Dr. Jonah Piovia-Scott, an associate professor of biological sciences at Washington State University, holds up an antifungal bath, which aims to protect froglets from the deadly chytrid fungus.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"4308\" width=\"5514\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0ztp3c001x3b6rk1fecnyw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The team expanded into larger-scale field experiments at meadow sites in Northern California, immersing hundreds of froglets in medicated baths for five minutes a day over six consecutive days.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0ztp3c001y3b6ri2ub4pa7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In a <a href=\"https:\/\/conbio.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/csp2.12762\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a> published in 2022, they found that treated frogs were four times more likely than those untreated to survive their first winter, which is a critical hurdle for young frogs; those that survive it are far more likely to reach adulthood and reproduce.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0ztp3c001z3b6rqfw2c8ig@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While antifungal baths are a valuable and scalable tool, Piovia-Scott stressed they are a short-term \u201cBand-Aid.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0ztp3c00203b6riq441ahp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019re not trying to set up a situation where the only way we can keep these animals alive is treating them with an antifungal chemical every year,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t think that\u2019s a good long-term solution.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0ztp3c00213b6rs6hg98fn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Instead, he said the treatment works best alongside other strategies, such as translocations \u2014 moving frogs back into their former habitats to help reestablish populations. His team is already putting that approach into practice by relocating frogs from a nearby healthy population into protected sites in Lassen Volcanic National Park, a former Cascades frog stronghold, after first treating them.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/dsc0082.jpg\" alt=\"Piovia-Scott's research focuses on treating metamorphosed tadpoles (young frogs), pictured. \u201cThe idea is not necessarily that they won't be reinfected, but that we will have helped them get through this crucial life stage where they're very likely to die from the disease,\u201d Piovia-Scott said.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"4912\" width=\"7360\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0ztp3c00223b6rhzzb8g1b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ultimately, he echoes Rosenblum: the goal is to maintain populations long enough for natural resistance to develop \u2014 which is already taking place. Piovia-Scott explained that from California to Central America, amphibians that suffered severe declines from chytrid are beginning to rebound.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0ztp3c00233b6rgvy143rc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This recovery isn\u2019t because the fungus has weakened, he said \u2014 the frogs have adapted. \u201cBut you can\u2019t develop resistance if the population doesn\u2019t exist,\u201d Piovia-Scott stressed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0ztp3c00243b6rzza137i9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Rosenblum praises the ingenuity behind solutions like frog saunas and antifungal baths, seeing them as proof of what human concern and ingenuity can achieve \u2014 while also underscoring the challenges involved in scaling such hands-on interventions across thousands of species and habitats.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0ztp3c00253b6rqgk8u713@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThese strategies are worth testing, but global implementation is really hard,\u201d she said, adding that we need to carefully weigh both the benefits and the potential unanticipated effects of intervening in natural habitats.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0zu7m700293b6rt7d13j25@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For Rosenblum, Waddle and Piovia-Scott, the long-term objective is to reach a point where frogs can survive on their own \u2014 without constant human intervention.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0zuiu8002b3b6rqo3a1v4i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For Waddle, that kind of futureproofing may lie in synthetic biology \u2014 making frogs genetically resistant to chytrid fungus.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0zuiu8002c3b6rewj0470g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Scientists still don\u2019t fully understand how some frogs naturally fight off chytrid, but Waddle said certain amphibians produce antibodies in their skin that can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0145305X0100088X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">kill the fungus<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0zuiu8002d3b6rxl5rgu5p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Waddle is now testing whether vulnerable frog species can be given those same natural defenses using genetic editing. He stresses the work is in its early days and must be approached with extreme caution.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/me-with-frog-by-yorick-lambreghts-5.JPG\" alt=\"Waddle, pictured, believes classic conservation tools alone \u2014 including his own innovations \u2014 won\u2019t be enough to stop the amphibian extinction crisis. \" every=\"\" year=\"\" the=\"\" extinction=\"\" rate=\"\" accelerates=\"\" he=\"\" said=\"\" adding=\"\" need=\"\" to=\"\" do=\"\" something=\"\" drastic=\"\" if=\"\" we=\"\" want=\"\" actually=\"\" make=\"\" a=\"\" difference.=\"\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"4160\" width=\"6240\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0zuiu8002e3b6r2qvbm1re@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe need to make sure it works and doesn\u2019t have negative effects on the frogs and we also have to think through every possible unintended consequence,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0zuiu8002f3b6rdkh2u8a4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Last October, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) adopted its first <a href=\"https:\/\/iucn.org\/news\/202510\/iucn-agrees-first-global-policy-synthetic-biology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">global policy<\/a> on synthetic biology, acknowledging that it could play a role in conservation, while also emphasizing the need for careful, case-by-case evaluation of risks and benefits.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0zuiu8002g3b6r58rkmv3d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For some species, less radical tools may be enough, Waddle acknowledged, but for amphibians that don\u2019t respond to classic conservation measures and are on the brink of extinction, he sees little alternative.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0zuiu8002h3b6ruz7kz8q9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Protecting biodiversity isn\u2019t just about preserving ecosystems, he added. \u201cFrogs have thousands of compounds in their skin with powerful antibacterial properties, and we\u2019re just starting to touch on their impacts,\u201d said Waddle.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0zuiu8002i3b6r3866beb1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At a time when antibiotic resistance is becoming a global crisis, these compounds could be important not just for frogs, but for human medicine, he noted.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0zuiu8002j3b6rlfs0vr7a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Scientists have already seen hints of that potential: a protein found in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/immunity\/fulltext\/S1074-7613(17)30128-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">South Indian frogs<\/a> has been shown to protect mice from influenza, preventing infection before it takes hold.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0zuiu8002k3b6rw2ogisud@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For Rosenblum, hope lies not in one tool or technology, but in a global effort to protect amphibians.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm0zuiu8002l3b6r7ncd0zfh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhat blankets the world are those collaborative networks of humans who care enough to be inventive on behalf of other species on our planet,\u201d she said.
