{"id":303335,"date":"2026-02-26T15:02:18","date_gmt":"2026-02-26T15:02:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/303335\/"},"modified":"2026-02-26T15:02:18","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T15:02:18","slug":"defence-force-to-test-air-land-and-sea-drones-from-mount-maunganui-company","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/303335\/","title":{"rendered":"Defence Force to test air, land, and sea drones from Mount Maunganui company"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/4JSLRC1_SA2_UAS_png.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"548\" alt=\"The Defence Force is going to begin testing air, land and sea drones from a Mount Maunganui company.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\n<p>Photo: Supplied\n<\/p>\n<p>The Defence Force is to begin testing 14 air, land and sea drones from a Mount Maunganui company.<\/p>\n<p>Syos Aerospace drones are used in Ukraine and it recently took another step towards helping develop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/futuristic-helicopter-drones-programme-advances-as-british-based-companies-selected-to-develop-prototypes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;wingman drones&#8217; for the UK&#8217;s<\/a> Apache attack helicopters, including for strike and target acquisition<\/p>\n<p>The government said the trial of the combat-proven tech would strengthen capability while growing the local industry.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Having cutting-edge drone technology developed and supported by local businesses will reduce supply chain risk and strengthen our resilience,&#8221; said Defence Minister Judith Collins in a statement on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The Beehive said the contract value was commercially sensitive at this stage.<\/p>\n<p>The trials in the coming months would include transporting supplies, and doing maritime patrols and route reconnaissance.<\/p>\n<p>Syos told RNZ it was unable to comment on the specific quantities of each drone, but confirmed the order covered multiple units across air, land, and sea domains.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is an opportunity for NZDF to employ our technology in their experimentation and learning programmes [that] accelerates their understanding of autonomous systems and demonstrates how these capabilities can deliver cost-efficient solutions for New Zealand&#8217;s future defence needs,&#8221; it said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/4JSLRC1_SG400_UGV_png.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"548\" alt=\"The Defence Force is going to begin testing air, land and sea drones from a Mount Maunganui company.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\n<p>Photo: Supplied\n<\/p>\n<p>NZDF said it was looking at integrating the drones with a fire control system designed and built in New Zealand by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hdt.nz\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">European firm Hirtenberger.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>New Zealand consulting firm Sysdoc would support training.<\/p>\n<p>Defence ran consultations with companies in January around a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/top\/584070\/ministry-of-defence-seeks-advice-for-plan-to-have-drones-scour-pacific\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">potential plan for surveillance drones to scour the Pacific<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Its long-range drone project has a ballpark budget of $100-$300 million over four years. Other sums would be spent on AI in behind that.<\/p>\n<p>Budget 2025 funded counter-drone systems &#8211; say, that shoot down drones &#8211; as one of 15 &#8220;priority&#8221; projects, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/562493\/drone-funding-in-budget-does-not-include-priority-maritime-models\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">but not maritime or other drones.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/4JSLRC1_SM300_USV_png.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"548\" alt=\"The Defence Force is going to begin testing air, land and sea drones from a Mount Maunganui company.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\n<p>Photo: Supplied\n<\/p>\n<p>Collins said the Syos deal was exactly what the recently released defence industry strategy called for, for delivering on the $12 billion defence capability plan.<\/p>\n<p>The army and navy get to test Syos&#8217; SG400 Uncrewed Ground Vehicle, SM300 Uncrewed Surface Vessel, SA2 ISR drone and SA7 one-way effector drone.<\/p>\n<p>The one-way effector drone was &#8220;exceptionally low cost&#8221;, so suited to hostile or high-risk environments, said Syos.<\/p>\n<p>What its role was depended on what payload the operator put on it. NZDF would evaluate it for missions like &#8220;neutralising designated targets&#8221; and to help develop capability in unmanned systems. Syos said this fit with lessons coming out of the Ukraine battlefield.<\/p>\n<p>The NZDF has been part of big drone-testing exercises by the US and other Five Eyes partners in recent years, but last year took just a single drone to one such <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/563208\/nz-defence-force-contingent-headed-for-large-joint-military-exercise-with-one-drone\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">joint exercise in Australia.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Syos said it was delighted.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/4JSLRC1_SAM_2_png.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"548\" alt=\"Syos chief executive and founder Sam Vye.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nSyos chief executive and founder Sam Vye.<br \/>\nPhoto: Supplied\n<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our platforms and systems have been proven in some of the world&#8217;s most demanding environments, and we&#8217;re proud to bring that experience to New Zealand&#8217;s capability development,&#8221; said chief executive and founder Sam Vye.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Structured experimentation&#8221; at NZDF aligned with how they worked, he added.<\/p>\n<p>The NZDF is trying to align itself with its Australian counterpart on emerging military tech.
