{"id":303379,"date":"2026-02-26T15:39:12","date_gmt":"2026-02-26T15:39:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/303379\/"},"modified":"2026-02-26T15:39:12","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T15:39:12","slug":"sunlive-mount-surf-club-stays-shut-after-fatal-landslide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/303379\/","title":{"rendered":"SunLive &#8211; Mount surf club stays shut after fatal landslide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>It meant the building was unsafe to occupy due to external risks, but did not mean it had to be demolished.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service chair Brent Warner told the\u00a0Bay of Plenty Times\u00a0there had been a \u201cnumber of challenges\u201d due to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/bay-of-plenty-times\/news\/mount-maunganui-landslide-lifeguard-service-clubhouse-declared-unsafe\/A6T62ONHCZBNVNOAELDD27PYEM\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/bay-of-plenty-times\/news\/mount-maunganui-landslide-lifeguard-service-clubhouse-declared-unsafe\/A6T62ONHCZBNVNOAELDD27PYEM\/\">red placard placed on the clubhouse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s pretty hard to quantify; we\u2019ve gone from a 6000 square metre building to probably a 25sq m building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>He said the lifeguard service had gone through a \u201csignificant change\u201d, shifting to temporary facilities, and adapting patrols, storage and operations.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Core rescue equipment was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/bay-of-plenty-times\/news\/lifeguards-clear-mount-maunganui-clubhouse-under-police-supervision-after-red-placard-issued\/BIYEFRCZAJHO7BWUHMWF2SEMCQ\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/bay-of-plenty-times\/news\/lifeguards-clear-mount-maunganui-clubhouse-under-police-supervision-after-red-placard-issued\/BIYEFRCZAJHO7BWUHMWF2SEMCQ\/\">moved to a Portacom and storage container<\/a>\u00a0along the Main Beach and the west side of the Commons Ave toilet block.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo access the beach, we run IRB motors in car parks on the side of the road, and take them along the road, down to the beach, and while that\u2019s less far from ideal, it\u2018s manageable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Mount Maunganui Surf Lifesaving Club cleared out all their equipment after the building was red-placarded. Photo\/ Corey Fleming<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Warner said the club had a \u201chigh-level\u201d briefing from Tauranga City Council on the risks posed by slips behind the club\u2019s building.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Geologists and geotechnical engineers gave\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/bay-of-plenty-times\/news\/mauao-landslide-risk-mount-maunganui-surf-club-red-stickered-hot-pools-alert-system\/MF4YI3P6JBDA3P5RF2CPDANA3E\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/bay-of-plenty-times\/news\/mauao-landslide-risk-mount-maunganui-surf-club-red-stickered-hot-pools-alert-system\/MF4YI3P6JBDA3P5RF2CPDANA3E\/\">updated assessments<\/a>\u00a0to the council after inspecting the Mauao landslide and affected tracks.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>In a statement from Tauranga City Council, engineers found 42 landslides on the walking tracks.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-four landslides fell within the moderate, moderate\u2013severe, and severe categories, indicating locations where track reinstatement was likely to require more than simple clean-up.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re in a holding pattern of waiting to receive additional information before we\u2019re anywhere close to making a decision on what the future of the surf club looks like,\u201d Warner said.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>He couldn\u2019t give a time frame for when the building could be reoccupied, but wanted to make it \u201cvery clear\u201d that the decision was solely for the lifeguards to make.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe timeline will be set by the Mount Lifeguard Service because we will make the final decision on what reoccupancy looks like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Warner said at all times, lifeguards were an emergency rescue service who put themselves in harm\u2019s way to keep the public safe.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re aware of the community\u2019s love of the lifeguard service, and what we\u2019d ask from them is some patience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>He said the service often had vulnerable people inside its facility, and 200 to 250 junior surf members under the age of 12 could often occupy the building.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"The Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service building was one of four sites on Adams Ave issued with a red placard under the Civil Defence Emergency Management Act. We\u2019re aware there\u2019s a significant community interest in our facility, it is a taonga, along with Mauao.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Warner said the lifeguard service was proceeding through a process with engineers and the council to ensure decisions made were based on the best information and were supported by appropriate due diligence.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we don\u2019t put anyone at risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>He asked the community for patience and breathing space to give the club time to assess all information available to them.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are continuing to deliver lifeguard services like nothing has changed. We\u2019ve been there keeping them safe since 1929, and we\u2019ll be there for another 97 years after this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>In a statement to the Bay of Plenty Times, Tauranga City Council said it was waiting on advice from geo-technical engineers about the risk that remained with the building.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd what, if anything, we ought to do before deeming the surf club building safe to occupy again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>The council said this would be communicated by downgrading the red placard, which would allow conversations to proceed with the surf club about reopening the building.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not expect the surf club to be closed permanently, but there will likely need to be some management procedures, such as evacuation plans, in place for the foreseeable future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/author\/kaitlyn-morrell\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kaitlyn Morrell<\/a>\u00a0is a journalist for the Bay of Plenty Times and Rotorua Daily Post.
