Nearly 15 years after a divisive run in theaters, director Ridley Scott<\/a>‘s sci-fi blockbuster Prometheus<\/a> took the number one spot on the global Netflix charts last week. The movie surprisingly outperformed holdover hits like The Rip<\/a>, and even family-friendly entertainers such as The Addams Family<\/a>. Prometheus marked Scott’s long-awaited return to the Alien franchise, which he began in 1979 with the landmark original film. The original movie was followed by the equally beloved Aliens<\/a>, directed by James Cameron<\/a>, and the controversial Alien 3<\/a>, which marked David Fincher<\/a>‘s feature directorial debut. The franchise then entered a largely uneven period before being resurrected by Prometheus in 2012. The divisive movie seems to have developed a cult following in the years since, going by its recent performance on Netflix. However, it has now been overtaken by a mystery-thriller that’s quickly turning into a word-of-mouth sensation across the globe.<\/p>\n Prometheus received mostly positive reviews upon release, but die-hard fans of the Alien franchise<\/a> were left dissatisfied by its philosophical tone and perceived plot holes. Prometheus starred Noomi Rapace<\/a> in the lead role, alongside an ensemble including Michael Fassbender<\/a>, Charlize Theron<\/a>, Guy Pearce<\/a>, Idris Elba<\/a>, and Logan Marshall-Green<\/a>. Produced on a reported budget of $130 million and filmed using 3D cameras on practical sets, Prometheus grossed more than $400 million worldwide. It remains the highest-grossing installment of the series to this day, and holds a “Certified Fresh” 73% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. Scott returned to direct a follow-up titled Alien: Covenant<\/a>, which grossed $270 million worldwide on a reported $100 million budget. The franchise returned to form a couple of years ago with Alien: Romulus<\/a>, which grossed $350 million globally.<\/p>\n Here’s the Mystery Thriller That Has Overtaken Prometheus<\/p>\n After dominating the global Netflix charts over the last few days, Prometheus was replaced at the number one spot by the new Spanish-language film Firebreak. Directed by David Victori, the movie stars Bel\u00e9n Cuesta and Diana G\u00f3mez from Money Heist<\/a>, and follows a woman whose daughter goes missing during a tense family holiday while a fire threatens to engulf the surrounding woods. Firebreak remains the most-watched movie on Netflix, according to FlixPatrol. It is outperforming not only Prometheus, but also the new World War II drama The Swedish Connection<\/a> and Val Kilmer<\/a>‘s spy thriller The Saint<\/a>. You can watch Firebreak on Netflix.
