Cleveland has been transformed into one of the country\u2019s most literary cities throughout September, with eight literary partners coming together to promote social justice programming, artistic excellence, and community engagement, and events around literature<\/a> during the inaugural Cleveland Book Fest<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As Literary Cleveland<\/a>\u2019s Inkubator conference<\/a> wrapped up last weekend, all attention this weekend is on the 90th anniversary of the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards Ceremony<\/a> on Friday, Sept. 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Maltz Performing Arts Center<\/a>, 1855 Ansel Road in University Circle.<\/p>\n

The 2025 award winners to be honored include:\u00a0<\/p>\n

Pulitzer Prize-winning poet\u00a0Yusef Komunyakaa\u00a0<\/a>will receive the\u00a0Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his profound impact on American literature.<\/p>\n

Known for his lyrical explorations of war, memory, and race, Komunyakaa has shaped contemporary poetry with a voice that is both unflinching and deeply evocative. While Yusef Komunyakaa is unable to attend the awards in-person, his poetic legacy will be honored during the evening\u2019s program.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0 Tickets are free<\/a>, but required. There will be a standby line at the venue; if there is available space, people will be seated on a first come, first served basis. A livestream option will be available<\/a> for those who cannot attend in person.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n

City Club Forum<\/p>\n

Before the awards ceremony Friday night, City Club on Friday, Sept. 19 at 11:30 a.m. will host a Friday Forum, \u201cRediscovering Resistance: John Swanson Jacobs and 600,000 Despots<\/a>\u201d by John Swanson Jacobs; a conversation with Anisfield-Wolf Book Award winner Jonathan D.S. Schroeder.<\/p>\n

The forum will be held at City Club, 1317 Euclid Ave., Suite 100, but ticket sales have ended. A livestream will be available<\/a>. Third Space Reading Room<\/a> will be on-site for book sales, and the author will be signing books.<\/p>\n

The 90th Anniversary Celebration<\/p>\n

On Saturday, Sept. 20 at the\u00a0Cleveland Public Library, MLK Branch<\/a>, 10601 Euclid Ave., the 90th Anniversary Celebration<\/a> of Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards kicks off at 9 a.m. and runs through 12:30 p.m. \u00a0<\/p>\n

The celebration begins with an opening keynote by jury chair\u00a0Natasha Trethewey, \u201cOpening and Challenging Minds Since 1935: How 90 Years of the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards has Shaped How We Think About Race.\u201d<\/p>\n

Complimentary refreshments will be served before a series of rich conversations and readings featuring past AWBA winners and jurors.<\/p>\n

A conversation honoring\u00a0Danzy Senna, winner of the 2025 Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for Fiction, for her sharp, genre-bending collection\u00a0\u201cColored Television,\u201d and Deesha Philyaw, author of\u00a0The Secret Lives of Church Ladies\u00a0and Anisfield-Wolf juror. Drawn from Memory: The Role of Art in Shaping Identity<\/a><\/p>\n

2 p.m.\u00a0Cleveland Museum of Art\u2019s Transformer Station<\/a>, 1460 W. 29th St., 44113<\/p>\n

An afternoon of storytelling, art, and conversation with Tessa Hulls, artist and author of\u00a0\u201cFeeding Ghosts,\u201d the first-ever graphic memoir to win an Anisfield-Wolf Book Award\u2014and the inaugural winner in the memoir category.\u00a0Moderated by acclaimed writer\u00a0Peter Ho Davies. Registration<\/a> is free but required.<\/p>\n

Revival: A Slave Narrative Reawakened<\/a><\/p>\n

3 p.m. St. John’s Episcopal Church<\/a>, 2600 Church Ave., 44113<\/p>\n

Presented in partnership with Karamu House<\/a><\/p>\n

A moving afternoon of performance and reflection as the Karamu House Ensemble breathes life into the 1855 slave narrative of John Swanson Jacobs\u2014an extraordinary account nearly forgotten by history, but recently rediscovered by\u00a0Jonathan D. S. Schroeder\u00a0in his Anisfield-Wolf Book Award winning text,\u00a0\u201cThe United States Governed by Six Hundred Thousand Despots: A True Story of Slavery; A Rediscovered Narrative, with a Full Biography.\u201d Schroeder will provide historical context and insight, helping audiences understand the significance of Jacobs\u2019 life in the wake of enslavement.<\/p>\n

Yard Show: Poetry of Belonging, Nature, and Black Creative Placemaking<\/a><\/p>\n

Meet at Ohio City Farm for a poetry reading and cultural gathering with acclaimed writer\u00a0Janice N. Harrington, celebrating her Anisfield-Wolf Book Award winning collection,\u00a0\u201cYard Show.\u201d\u00a0Set amidst one of the nation\u2019s largest urban farms, this event honors the Black midwestern tradition of the yard show\u2014where everyday materials and personal memory transform outdoor spaces into vibrant, living art.\u00a0The event will include a reading and conversation with Harrington; reflections on the cultural and ecological significance of front yard shows;\u00a0and a guided walk through the farm\u2019s cultivated grounds.<\/p>\n
