{"id":30472,"date":"2025-09-18T23:37:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-18T23:37:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/30472\/"},"modified":"2025-09-18T23:37:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-18T23:37:10","slug":"90-years-of-truth-telling-through-literature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/30472\/","title":{"rendered":"90 years of truth telling through literature"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cleveland has been transformed into one of the country\u2019s most literary cities throughout September, with eight literary partners coming together to promote social justice programming, artistic excellence, and community engagement, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anisfield-wolf.org\/2025\/07\/2025-cleveland-book-fest-schedule\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">events around literature<\/a> during the inaugural <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clevelandfoundation.org\/stories-events\/stories-news\/2025\/07\/18\/local-literary-partners-and-libraries-announce-inaugural-cleveland-book-fest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Cleveland Book Fest<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.litcleveland.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Literary Cleveland<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freshwatercleveland.com\/features\/Literary-Clevelands-2025-Inkubator-Writing-Conference-Is-Underway_091025.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Inkubator conference<\/a> wrapped up last weekend, all attention this weekend is on the 90th anniversary of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anisfield-wolf.org\/events\/2025-anisfield-wolf-book-awards-ceremony\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards Ceremony<\/a> on Friday, Sept. 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the <a href=\"https:\/\/case.edu\/maltzcenter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Maltz Performing Arts Center<\/a>, 1855 Ansel Road in University Circle.<\/p>\n<p>The 2025 award winners to be honored include:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pulitzer Prize-winning poet\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poets\/yusef-komunyakaa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Yusef Komunyakaa\u00a0<\/a>will receive the\u00a0Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his profound impact on American literature.<\/p>\n<p>Known for his lyrical explorations of war, memory, and race, Komunyakaa has shaped contemporary poetry with a voice that is both unflinching and deeply evocative. While Yusef Komunyakaa is unable to attend the awards in-person, his poetic legacy will be honored during the evening\u2019s program.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/ci.ovationtix.com\/36661\/production\/1224266?performanceId=11570128\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Tickets are free<\/a>, but required. There will be a standby line at the venue; if there is available space, people will be seated on a first come, first served basis. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anisfield-wolf.org\/2025-live-stream\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">livestream option will be available<\/a> for those who cannot attend in person.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>View a list of all Anisfield-Wolf award <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anisfield-wolf.org\/winners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">winners over the past 90 years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>City Club Forum<\/p>\n<p>Before the awards ceremony Friday night, City Club on Friday, Sept. 19 at 11:30 a.m. will host a Friday Forum, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.anisfield-wolf.org\/events\/awba-city-club-friday-forum-rediscovering-resistance-john-swanson-jacobs-and-600000-despots\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Rediscovering Resistance: John Swanson Jacobs and 600,000 Despots<\/a>\u201d by John Swanson Jacobs; a conversation with Anisfield-Wolf Book Award winner Jonathan D.S. Schroeder.<\/p>\n<p>The forum will be held at City Club, 1317 Euclid Ave., Suite 100, but ticket sales have ended. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityclub.org\/forums\/2025\/09\/19\/rediscovering-resistance-john-swanson-jacobs-and-600000-despots\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">livestream will be available<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anisfield-wolf.org\/events\/awba-city-club-friday-forum-rediscovering-resistance-john-swanson-jacobs-and-600000-despots\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Third Space Reading Room<\/a> will be on-site for book sales, and the author will be signing books.<\/p>\n<p>The 90th Anniversary Celebration<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, Sept. 20 at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cpl.org\/location\/martinlkingjr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Cleveland Public Library, MLK Branch<\/a>, 10601 Euclid Ave., the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anisfield-wolf.org\/events\/90th-anniversary-celebration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">90th Anniversary Celebration<\/a> of Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards kicks off at 9 a.m. and runs through 12:30 p.m. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The celebration begins with an opening keynote by jury chair\u00a0Natasha Trethewey, \u201cOpening and Challenging Minds Since 1935: How 90 Years of the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards has Shaped How We Think About Race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Complimentary refreshments will be served before a series of rich conversations and readings featuring past AWBA winners and jurors.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/the-90th-anniversary-celebration-tickets-1549342598419?aff=oddtdtcreator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Tickets are free<\/a>, but required, and depleting fast.<\/p>\n<p>Meet some of the award-winning authors on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 20 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at various locations.
