Since 2019, Microsoft and OpenAI have worked together to advance artificial intelligence responsibly and make its benefits\u00a0broadly accessible. What began as a research partnership has grown into one of the most consequential collaborations in technology \u2014 grounded in mutual trust, deep technical integration, and a long\u2011term commitment to innovation.\u00a0<\/p>\n
As\u00a0conversations around AI investments and partnerships grow\u00a0and as OAI announces new funding and new partners\u00a0as they did\u00a0today,\u00a0we\u00a0want to\u00a0ensure\u00a0these\u00a0announcements\u00a0are\u00a0understood within\u00a0the existing construct of\u00a0our\u00a0partnership.\u00a0Nothing about today\u2019s announcements in any way changes the terms of the Microsoft and OpenAI relationship that have been previously shared in\u00a0our joint blog in October 2025<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n The partnership\u00a0remains\u00a0strong and central.\u00a0Microsoft and OpenAI continue to work closely across research, engineering, and product development, building on years of deep collaboration and shared success.\u00a0<\/p>\n Our IP relationship\u00a0continues\u00a0unchanged.\u00a0Microsoft\u00a0maintains\u00a0its\u00a0exclusive license\u00a0and access\u00a0to\u00a0intellectual property across OpenAI models and products.\u00a0Collaborations like the partnership\u00a0between OpenAI and\u00a0Amazon\u00a0were\u00a0always\u00a0contemplated under our\u00a0agreements\u00a0and\u00a0Microsoft is\u00a0excited\u00a0to see what they build together.\u00a0<\/p>\n Our commercial and revenue share relationship\u00a0remains\u00a0unchanged.\u00a0The ongoing revenue share arrangement\u00a0remains\u00a0unchanged and has\u00a0always\u00a0included\u00a0sharing revenue from\u00a0partnerships\u00a0between OpenAI and other cloud providers.\u00a0<\/p>\n Azure\u00a0remains\u00a0the\u00a0exclusive\u00a0cloud provider of\u00a0stateless\u00a0OpenAI\u00a0APIs. Microsoft is the exclusive cloud provider for\u00a0stateless\u00a0APIs\u00a0that\u00a0provide access to\u00a0OpenAI\u2019s models\u00a0and\u00a0IP. These APIs can be\u00a0purchased\u00a0from Microsoft or\u00a0directly from\u00a0OpenAI.\u00a0Customers\u00a0and developers\u00a0benefit\u00a0from Azure\u2019s global infrastructure, security, and enterprise-grade capabilities\u00a0at scale.\u00a0Any stateless API calls to OpenAI models\u00a0that result from a collaboration between OpenAI and any third party \u2013 including Amazon \u2013 would be hosted on Azure.\u00a0<\/p>\n OpenAI\u2019s first party products, including\u00a0Frontier, will continue to be hosted\u00a0on Azure.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n AGI definition and processes are unchanged.\u00a0The\u00a0contractual\u00a0definition of AGI and the process for\u00a0determining\u00a0if it has been achieved\u00a0remains\u00a0the same.<\/p>\n The partnership\u00a0supports\u00a0OpenAI\u2019s growth.\u00a0As OpenAI scales, it\u00a0continues to have\u00a0flexibility to\u00a0commit\u00a0to\u00a0additional\u00a0compute\u00a0elsewhere, including through large-scale infrastructure initiatives such as\u00a0the\u00a0Stargate\u00a0project.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n The\u00a0partnership\u00a0was\u00a0designed to give Microsoft and OpenAI room to pursue new opportunities independently, while continuing to collaborate, which each company is\u00a0doing, together\u00a0and independently.\u00a0<\/p>\n We\u00a0remain\u00a0committed to our partnership and to the shared mission that brought us together.
