Photo \/ David Hall<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">He said he was involved in advancing the budget for the P\u0101p\u0101moa East Interchange about seven years ago and was excited to see the project completed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cResidents will be watching NZTA\u2019s decision on tolling with great interest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">Morris said the P\u0101p\u0101moa Shared Pathway extension from Parton Rd to Taylor Reserve would start and \u201chopefully provide another sea-view platform\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">The council would try to get the \u201clong-awaited\u201d upgrade of the southern part of Domain Rd into the Regional Land Transport Plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">Findings of the engineering report into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/tauranga-traffic-turret-rd-tidal-lane-gets-initial-funding\/EBVXX5VIAZBE3AV3BJTGODKOAA\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/tauranga-traffic-turret-rd-tidal-lane-gets-initial-funding\/EBVXX5VIAZBE3AV3BJTGODKOAA\/\">Turret Rd bridge<\/a> would also be important to P\u0101p\u0101moa commuters. Photo \/ David Hall<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">He also wanted to work with all interested groups to complete Taurikura Drive through to Tauriko Sawmill &amp; Timber Suppliers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThese two roading projects may not be approved in 2026, but I will work to keep them in the discussion as roading projects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mauao\/Mount Maunganui <\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">Councillor and Deputy Mayor Jen Scoular* said she was a big supporter of the investment into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/bay-of-plenty-times\/news\/tauranga-city-council-confirms-grant-for-50m-mount-maunganui-college-pool\/MGUFD67RCFGI7LEDBQWUUSXQYM\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/bay-of-plenty-times\/news\/tauranga-city-council-confirms-grant-for-50m-mount-maunganui-college-pool\/MGUFD67RCFGI7LEDBQWUUSXQYM\/\">Mount College 50-metre outdoor swimming pool.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Deputy Mayor and Mount Maunganui ward councillor Jen Scoular. Photo \/ David Hall<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">She backed better transport solutions for cars, trucks, buses and bikes and for sustainable upkeep for local assets, particularly Mauao and the coastline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI will advocate for the Mount Business Association, for the sports and recreation facilities, including surf life-saving, and for major and minor events at the fantastic venues, including Bay Oval.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">*Scoular\u2019s comments were provided before the Mauao landslide. Photo \/ David Hall<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI\u2019m working to find an affordable solution for residents to retain the amenity they have paid to enjoy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">Curach said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/bay-of-plenty-times\/news\/mauao-landslide-damage-tauranga-mayor-hopeful-iconic-maunga-will-reopen\/D6DE557XL5CCHHGJC6DOO6WILM\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/bay-of-plenty-times\/news\/mauao-landslide-damage-tauranga-mayor-hopeful-iconic-maunga-will-reopen\/D6DE557XL5CCHHGJC6DOO6WILM\/\">recent weather events<\/a> highlighted the need to be prepared for potentially deadly natural disasters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cTsunami evacuation is top of mind. <\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWhile effective phone alerts provide some peace of mind for those in areas of risk, having accessible and effective evacuation routes in place is still a work in progress and something I\u2019ll continue to focus on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bethlehem<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">Councillor Kevin Schuler said the plan for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/bay-of-plenty-times\/news\/tauranga-city-council-rules-out-housing-at-bethlehem-parau-farmspoteriwhi-site\/2XW6RU3IWZHJVLQJZC2DX45CJE\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/bay-of-plenty-times\/news\/tauranga-city-council-rules-out-housing-at-bethlehem-parau-farmspoteriwhi-site\/2XW6RU3IWZHJVLQJZC2DX45CJE\/\">P\u014dteriwhi, a significant piece of land next to the Wairoa River<\/a>, was his priority. <\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">He said it was bought for parks and sports fields, and he wanted to see it used as such, because those facilities were lacking in Tauranga\u2019s west.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Bethlehem ward councillor Kevin Schuler. Photo \/ David Hall<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">Another focus was understanding the stormwater network and resilience across his ward. <\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe have significant slopes all the way from Tauriko in the south to Bellevue in the north, and a range of semi-rural, old residential, and new subdivisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">Schuler said that, in the recent storm, there were slips and people naturally want assurances that their stormwater assets were functioning well. <\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cCouncil has done significant work in recent years to improve the stormwater infrastructure across the city, and I want to make sure we are in a good position.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Te Awanui<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">Te Awanui ward councillor H\u0113mi Rolleston said he represented all M\u0101ori across all wards in Tauranga.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Te Awanui ward councillor Hemi Rolleston. Photo \/ Supplied<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cMy plan for 2026 is to understand the needs of these M\u0101ori communities and build a pathway towards how they can work within Tauranga Council to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI plan to bring my experience, expertise, and relationships to strengthen the engagement with our M\u0101ori community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">His specific goals for 2026 included housing, specifically papak\u0101inga and kaum\u0101tua housing, to unlock a large amount of M\u0101ori land that was suitable for housing. <\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThe tragedy at Mauao has also required me to reset my goals and to work together with council, iwi and the community in partnership to find a common pathway towards the reinstatement of Mauao so we can all enjoy and appreciate this taonga again in the near future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">This year, the council would decide on the future of the M\u0101ori ward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cAs I said at my swearing-in in May, my job is to do a good job, to prove to our M\u0101ori community and our wider Tauranga community that it\u2019s a good thing.
