I feel fuller and I don\u2019t crave sugar anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">Her children, aged 11 and 8, eat similarly at home and treats tend to be home-baked goods made with alternative flours and honey, rather than white flour and sugar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThey definitely can find it challenging &#8230; but they\u2019re blooming good children,\u201d Miller said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cSometimes I allow them to eat things just to see how their body is feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">She says people become so used to feeling tired, foggy and low-energy from processed foods that they forget what \u201cfeeling well\u201d is.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">As meat prices <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/hawkes-bay-today\/news\/just-unaffordable-rising-prices-push-hawkes-bay-families-away-from-red-meat\/PS5C7NA4LFGEXC6YJKSFZRGVGI\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/hawkes-bay-today\/news\/just-unaffordable-rising-prices-push-hawkes-bay-families-away-from-red-meat\/PS5C7NA4LFGEXC6YJKSFZRGVGI\/\">continue to rise<\/a>, Miller says it\u2019s all about priorities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt definitely can be expensive, but I think life is expensive,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cOur family\u2019s priority is health, and so our food bills are the main thing we spend our money on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">She buys meat from local butchers and organic suppliers rather than supermarkets and avoids seed oils, cooking instead with butter, lard, tallow or ghee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">Miller describes her family\u2019s diet as low-carb and animal-based rather than strictly \u201ccarnivore\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">She tried a month of eating only animal foods but eventually found herself craving fruit and vegetables again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI got bored,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cBut you could thrive without any vegetables &#8230; There are no essential carbohydrates that we need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">She does three weight sessions a week and walks daily.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI feel like I can stay leaner and nicely hold muscle mass by eating more protein,\u201d Miller said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">Four of her close friends are lifelong vegetarians, but she said she might be \u201cslowly converting\u201d them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cSome of them have started eating fish now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Krystie Miller in her Hawke's Bay kitchen with the animal-based foods she eats daily, flexing the muscle she says comes from a high-protein diet. Photo \/ Rafaella Melo<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">For Central Hawke\u2019s Bay man Conrad Kirk, socialising is the only downside of a limited diet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cYou can\u2019t really go anywhere for dinner or go out for lunch,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">Nearly a year ago, Kirk switched to what he calls a strict carnivore diet after years of inflammation, indigestion and \u201cbrain fog\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">Blood tests and online research led him to try eating only meat and eggs, with no alcohol.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cAfter two weeks, my inflammation had totally gone,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThe clarity in your mind and the energy is incredible. I don\u2019t get that 3pm yawn anymore &#8230; I wake up early, work all day, and I\u2019m nearly 50.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">Kirk usually has two meals a day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cYou eat a lot less &#8230; I started by eating sausages, bacon and eggs for breakfast, and then dinner was steak and eggs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cSlowly, I brought back some dairy products.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">His wife, Tracy Kirk, has also moved towards a carnivore diet after health issues of her own and has come off medication she\u2019d taken for decades, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt was amazing. After about three months, she looked so much better, and she felt better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">Conrad Kirk said the family\u2019s grocery bill has dropped.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cBefore, you\u2019d fill a trolley with all sorts of crap. Snacks, treats, three meals a day plus everything in between,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cNow, you\u2019re not buying all the extras, you\u2019re not getting takeaways, you\u2019re not doing coffees and cake for morning tea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWhen you factor in the true costs, I think you save money, and even if you didn\u2019t, the health benefit is so much greater.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The herbivore<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">On the other side of the plate is Havelock North pilates instructor Luciane Calabrese, who has eaten mostly vegetarian food for more than a decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">Calabrese once followed a high-protein paleo diet and saw performance gains, but later blood tests showed her iron levels were excessively high, and she worried about joint problems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">Meanwhile, she watched a documentary called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/entertainment\/sensational-claims-by-netflix-documentary-what-the-health-slammed-by-experts\/XVEARZD7X3APWELD4FX7GRG7DQ\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/entertainment\/sensational-claims-by-netflix-documentary-what-the-health-slammed-by-experts\/XVEARZD7X3APWELD4FX7GRG7DQ\/\">What the Health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThe impact of seeing how the food industry treats animals was huge,\u201d Calabrese said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI knew I wasn\u2019t going to change the world but for me, it made sense to stop eating meat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">Today, she eats a varied, plant-based diet built around rice and beans, tofu, tempeh, mushrooms, pumpkin seeds, nuts, fruits and plenty of vegetables.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">She has fish about two times a year for special occasions, uses vitamin B12 supplements and has blood tests periodically to monitor her iron and zinc levels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThey remain satisfactory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Luciane Calabrese in her Havelock North kitchen with the plant-based staples she relies on for her mostly vegetarian diet. Photo \/ Rafaella Melo<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">Calabrese\u2019s workout routine includes pilates, weights, pickleball and long hikes. She says her energy is equal to, or even better, than in her meat-eating years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cAfter a big meat meal, I used to feel heavy and sleepy. Now I feel lighter, with more clarity &#8230; even spiritually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">Being vegetarian in Hawke\u2019s Bay isn\u2019t always straightforward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">She finds fresh produce limited and expensive and says many restaurants offer only one or two vegetarian mains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIn the end, I think the costs come out about the same as if I ate meat,\u201d Calabrese said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cGood-quality vegetables are expensive, but good-quality meat is too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No single \u2018right\u2019 diet<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">Sports dietitian Lucy Burrows says both carnivore and herbivore diets can work for some people, but each comes with trade-offs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">She said a strict carnivore diet is \u201can extreme restriction\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cFor most people, it wouldn\u2019t be a healthy long-term way to eat, because you cut out certain essential nutrients like vitamin C,\u201d Burrows said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThere will be exceptions where it works better for some.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">She said well-planned vegetarian diets can be healthy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cYou just need to understand where your protein, iron and zinc are coming from &#8230; things like beans, lentils, tofu, nuts and seeds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">Burrows pushes back on the idea that carbohydrates are \u201cthe enemy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt\u2019s more about the types of carbohydrates that you eat &#8230; whole foods with fibre and nutrients, rather than processed, high-sugar options.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">But protein still matters, she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">For most adults, she recommends roughly 1.2-1.5g of protein per kilogram of body weight per day, roughly a palm-sized serving of protein each meal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">These proteins, she says, can come from either animal or plant sources.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cPast 30 to 35 years old, you gradually lose muscle mass if you\u2019re not using it or eating enough protein and calories,\u201d Burrows said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cYour muscles support your heart, lungs, bones and ligaments, so with less muscles, you\u2019re more likely to have a decline in function earlier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">For those cutting back on red meat because of cost, she suggests mixing cheaper proteins like chicken, eggs and tinned fish with plant sources and pairing iron-rich foods with vitamin C to boost absorption.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cChicken breast has a higher protein content and lower fat than other chicken cuts, and per gram, chicken breast would win over red meat, which usually contains more fat,\u201d Burrows said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"hVvnDVwvKaDCbCnNag\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThere\u2019s not one right way of eating &#8230;
